Respectfully disagree Bummy and Janitor. Too many romanticise Rocky because he was white in my book .. I'd say 99% of the Rocky diehards are white. The guy strikes a chord, period. You are telling me you honestly believe Rocky hit harder than Earnie Shavers, David Tua, Sonny Liston or Mike Tyson ? I don't even know how you start to justify such a statement.
I think Shavers is a bit over rated as a puncher, sure he ko the lower level guys, but most times he step up, he failed for the ko, or win. Marciano at least got the ko MOST times during his step up. I think he hit harder than Tyson imo. Tyson had a flash ko type of thing. There ok a movement or so after the punch. Were the Rock knock em out cold.
LOL, and then you woke up. Most of Marcianos opponents are cans, fact not fiction with a few once ok to great undersized grandpas thrown in when they were over the hill or had no other means to make a buck. Hell, one could even be classified as a yourneyman. Your pal Rocky walzed around THIRTY rounds with his signature oldie club, Walcott, Louis and Moore. Those are a lot of rounds for "ko them cold" lol..........while I can assure you that a Tyson who actually still was interested in boxing in the 80's would have murdered those shopworn has beens in less than a quarter of the rounds COMBINED. Now , don't feel bad now, you custom Rocky bedsheets will craddle you to sleep.
Joe Frazier also said far and away the best heavyweight champs up to his time, putting himself and Ali aside were Jack Johnson and Joe Louis. No doubt many fighters of all colors respected Rocky as they most certainly should. He was a great warrior. I just say that the Rocky diehards, still rating this 187 pound, 5' 11" fighter with a 69" reach an top all time heavyweight great are 99% white. The power statement was directed to Bummy. Earnie Shavers power overated, please. Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes and Ron Lyle all said nobody ever hit them as hard as Earnie Shavers. That's that.
I just think Shaver is over rated, Holmes never did credit Tyson. He can still hit, but he is not number 1 imo.
I am close friends with Larry and have discused this with him many times .. He said Tyson hit hard, no doubt but hit was more from speed. He lost balance and could not recover. He siad for pure poser Shavers was hands down harder. Larry actually said to this day he still gets flashbacks from the shot and it's power. Again, one man's opinion but definately first hand knowledge.
You keep talking about fighters and I am talking about boxing enthusiasts that I have read and met over the past 20 years ... any fighter that does not respect Rocky is nuts or jealous ... I'm refering to the extreme fans that swear he never got hurt, never got tired, was the hardest hitter of all time, ect .. apples and oranges ...
Actually, you're confusing Jack Johnson with Rocky Marciano. But I forgive, and if he may have changed his opinion on this it doesn't change the fact that he once said this. /end
Evey fighter about has been hurt, Dempsey, Louis, Robinson, Tunney, Walker, and even Marciano. Off the top of my head, the 11th round vs Walcott was perhaps Marciano's worse in regards to hurt, Dont think either knockdown hurt the Rock so to speak. Rocky been tired in his atm days, even got DQ for being out of shape. But a in shape top Marciano would still be swatting punchings in the 15th round. Sure I suppose he be tired after the fight and all that, but he was still a hard fighter to beat in the final rounds. Rocky has top stimia in the mode of Jeff or Ali imo. Rocky may or may not be the hardest puncher of all time, but he is ONE of the hardest, up there with Dempsey, Louis and Foreman imo.
