Are you not getting that people aren't pointing out its the changes in the game; its the changes in HIS 50 YEAR OLD BODY THAT HAS NOT FOUGHT IN OVER A DECADE. Rickson is speaking in the present as in "I could go fight them today, with my current body" Thats the joke.

If he said "when I was your age..." then he would be called slightly bitter but maybe right; but since he isn't saying that, he is called insane, arrogant, suicidal, and disrespectful.

Not to mention Rickson was not exactly the undisputed god of Vale Tudo, he was one of many, and there are several from that era I would lay money to beat him; Wanderlei first and foremost, Kerr, Ruas, Pele, and Renzo if they would fight.

I am not familiar with Sambo's rules. I have read Combat Sambo rules, and don't remember anything about a throw ending the fight. But I am not trying to argue this point. I have never tried to defend Rickson's mythical record. I realize it wouldn't be undefeated, but imagine Dan Henderson's record if he were to include his high school/amateur wrestling matches.

It's just the balls to try and act like a guy who has competed and won in several sambo (not combat sambo) tournies to not know the rules and expect people to believe him when they told him.

I haven't read the entire interview from which the quotes included by the op come from.

The only thing I'm going to question about your post is Ruas. Really? I believe Ruas to have some quality credentials, but c'mon. Ruas failed to outsrike Taktarov at the Ultimate Ultimate, so I have no doubts about Rickson's ability to close the distance to get a clinch. I believe that from all available footage, Rickson appears to be the much superior grappler. I really don't see an argument for making Ruas a clear favorite.

Clear favorite no, but probably even money. He supposedly fought Rickson to a draw in a gym; if thats true, add in the headbutts and brutality probably toned down in the gym, and I could see Ruas winning. Rickson might close the distance, but the actual takedown? Very average for a top level grappler, he takes a lot of attempts to finish them off.

Im a big fan of Rickson, I truly believe he is the best BJJ practitioner of all time, his Jiu jitsu is out of this planet & he is actually a brilliant wrestler & solid puncher when on the ground but not standing for some reason but he`s far too old to think he has any shot vs today`s fighters.

I wouldnt rule him out in his prime - tho with the size difference its still a very hard ask - but he`s 50 now & I dont care how well conditioned & disciplined he is, that would be an actual miracle if he beat any elite fighter in MMA rules.

I'm not trying to speak for Rickson or anything like that. I don't know him personally, and I don't have any formal background in psychology. We all realize he is at an age that would make his claims seem unlikely if he believes himself accomplishing them in the present time.

Then again, we have to remember he is a fighter. Most good, and definitely great, fighters have the confidence to believe they can defeat anyone. Rickson is still active as a grappler, and I hear he is still amazing. I don't know how competitive in nature his sessions are, but I haven't seen anyone claiming to have submitted Rickson. He may believe himself capable even now.

Conveniently for both sides of the argument, we will never see.

I really am not jumping down your throat because I think there is at least a plausible argument to be made that the game has advanced very far, just curious what your rational is? Really not looking to pick a fight.

Debatable, very very debatable, at best.

He won wrestling tournaments, but the strength of them is disputed to say the least, so in that sense he was a good wrestler I concede. In terms of taking people down in MMA, he was passable, not good, certainly not brilliant.

Iv seen GREAT Jujitsu technique from guys like Penn Aoki Bustamante **** it even Palhares. But all i ever see from Rickson is sentimental reflection and bravado. I find his entire act pretty annoying.

If Werdum could submit Fedor - Rickson would have done it too.
