Who takes this at 147? Surely Basilio gets to that chin eventually?

Hearns's most challenging fights at WW, IMO. A brutally strong, durable, and aggressive rough-houser like Basilio could potentially be a foil for Hearns. That is, if he was able to close the distance well enough to put in work on the inside. He wasn't too quick, but his defensive abilities were underrated. He used unorthodox bob and weave methods to make his way in on his opponents, and when he got to them he ripped away to the body and head. He was a beast in the clinch; rabbit punching, butting, bullying. I think the problem here is Basilio's relentlessness. If he could take whatever Hearns dished out, I think he'd get to him over 15 rounds, though he may still lose a close one on the cards. Intriguing matchup.

I agree about the defence. I always found it interesting how he could take breaks for a few seconds in fights without going forward, and he'd just avoid getting hit with head-movement alone and ducking down. He's only there to be hit when he's coming towards you.

Provided Carmen doesn't get caught flush, I see Basilio eventually finding a way under Tommy's jab, to the ribs and going to work from there. The Onion Farmer hammers away at the Hitmans' suspect stamina....and wins by late TKO.

All the evidence shows that the only way to clearly beat Hearns was to impose yourself physically as shown in all of his loses (all stoppages for that matter). Carmen fits the mold perfectly. An extremely durable and strong man who would be on Hearns every second of the bout, though the question whether or not he could deal with Hearns length comes into play. I see Basilio wearing him down in the later stretch unless he gets caught with something enormous, which wouldn't surprise me.

I like Carmen's offense a lot, i actually think there's decent handspeed when he lets them fly, not great, but good. He's very sharp as well, two fisted barrages from this man are not something you'd fancy being on the end of, to be blunt. His chin was immense, but you could still envision him being stopped here. While i agree his defense is underrated, i like someone like LaMotta as cagier, with Basilio for my money being the sharper offensive fighter. Basilio has a chance, the type of left hook that dropped Gavilan would do him well here, and at 147 pounds, i feel that that Hearns is always liable to get hit against a top level man like Basilio, who might be the greater welterweight here.

I suppose i pick Hearns, very interesting, if the fight were happening, i'd certainly put a bet on a Basilio stoppage.

Another hidden poll, I dont get it.

Ps. I voted Hearns by KO.

Basillio would take too many, he was tough but stoppable, Tommy was a brilliant fighter in just about every WWT fight he had minus rds 13 & 14 of a certain fight, Basillio would bore in & get brutalized IMO.

    Hearns TKO9 Basillio

Hmm... I figure SRR at MW is a harder puncher (especially in absolute terms) than Hearns at WW, and SRR couldn't stop him.

good stuff. Basilio is a handful for anyone at WW or MW for that. He was one determined guy would walk through a wall to win.

Very good defence with his bobbing an weaving and arm blocks, he rolls with punches aswell. I think hes a better jake laMotta.

i think he can take it, he took Robinsons best at MW

I think Basilio would take him late in an absouloute slug fest. a total classic, Hearns gets discouraged in the mid rounds and carmen pours it on and stops him late.

I think the early rounds would be very tough for Carmen, and either way I see this fight ending in a stoppage. IMO they would both win 5/10 in a 10 fight series. Carmen would get inside on Hearns and break him down half of the time, and Hearns would land his big right and the ref would have stop it half of the time. Great battle either way.

I could give you my opinions but the truth is that if this fight was going to happen tomorrow I wouldn't know who was going to win.

This fight is what the "theatre of the unexpected" is about.

Hearns isn't KOing anyone. My hearts says Basilio but my brains says Hearns. I think Hearns has physical advantages that are remarkable but Basilio has fought the bigger taller men before. He can out-tough and wear him down. If this is Hearns of the SRL fight then Basilio wins as that Hearns tired out. I'll say it's flip of a coin. Maybe 60/40 for Hearns. No KO though for Hearns, TKO due to cuts at most.
