From today's Daily Mirror: Amir Khan will be urged to give up the world title if he wins on Saturday and is then ordered to make a first defence against Marcos Maidana. Five years after winning an Olympic silver medal, the Bolton boxer steps up a division to challenge Ukrainian Andreas Kotelnik for the WBA light-welterweight title at the MEN Arena in Manchester. Khan's trainer Freddie Roach is confident he can win his first world title, but does not want the 22 year old anywhere near Argentine Maidana, who won the WBA interim title last month by stopping American Victor Ortiz. Instead Roach would rather see Khan beat Kotelnik and then fight Mexican legend Erik Morales in Las Vegas. American Roach said: "Someone mentioned fighting Marcos Maidana next. Why? Lets build that fight up. Do you fight that guy in your first defence for a little bit of money or do you make that fight down the road for a lot of money? Take the belt back if they order Amir to fight him next. Belts are fun to win but they don't make you money. Manny Pacquiao hasn't fought for a major belt in a long time. You fight the right fights at the right time. I am not keen on Maidana yet. I'd like to see Amir make his American debut next. There is a November date open. There is a possibility that we could fight Erik Morales who is making a comeback. It is a good name. It is timing and I think we can beat that guy. There are some good fights out there for him. He hasn't even fought in America yet. He will be a hit in America because he is a good looking kid and his style is fun to watch." Khan admitted: "I'm going to have to do something special to KO Kotelnik - and I will. I saw the Maidana - Ortiz fight and it was an impressive victory, and shows how good I need to be if I am to become a world champion." So if I have it right, the plan is to: (a) Take the belt from the seemingly criminally overlooked Andreas Kotelnik. The way Roach and SKY are talking Khan just has to turn up and Kotelnik will hand him the belt. (b) He has the belt. Now its time to run like **** from Maidana. Roach says he wants to build up the fight..........he's talking **** here. Styles make fights and Roach is just hoping that Maidana gets beat in the meantime by another straight up Kotelnik-type boxer. Roach knows that Maidana is a bad style for Khan. (c) Fight Erik "shot to pieces" Morales.atsch
I don't agree with this, Roach maybe **** sure, but the Sky team certainly aren't...in fact Jim Watt said that if he had a spare ton he would put it on Kotelnik late stoppage. As for Morales...Roach is a cherrypicker, you only have to see Pacs career of late to see that ( :hey ). He will make Khan a whole heap of money but he won't be covered in glory...farting through silk? or a sense of achievement? :think
To be fair Maidanas chin didn't look that much better than Khans, he got dropped by two nothing shots against a fighter who just didn't want to be in there when it all kicked off.
There statements are contradictory in this sense. They can make the odd comment like Watt did, but as a whole they are getting dragged into the "who next for Khan?" carnival. Most of there time seems to be spent on analysing Khan's future after the fight (if he wins) rather than analysing the fight itself.
His TNT spot seems to be higher than that...outside of serious neurological problems the only reason I can think of that makes him vulnerabble to shots so high up on his head is that he is dehydrated/poorly conditioned when he fights...a move up in weight should show us if his durability has improved, if it hasn't then its curtains for the young man as any class fighter will just jump on him.
They might say it, but they obviously don't believe it. Last night big Glen was asked about Khans chances and he looked as uncomfortable as a Paedo under questioning before he said Khan would win...the eyes never lie. I'm pissed off that you didn't take the Pac baiting :deal
if Khan gives up the belt its bull****. He should fight Maidana, then Salita, they are decent fights for him.
Sooner or later khan will get caught......i think roach is waiting to see what khan looks like against a solid but not great kotelnik....to decide how far he will take khan..... just my personal take....but I rather see morales hatton.....then morales khan, but just IMO
