Classic Excuses for a defeat

Angel Manfredy is the all time P4P king of excuses.

 

Hearns didn't actually bring that up though.

 

Before Roger Stafford's title shot at Don Curry, he spent all his time praying to Allah instead of warming up, got caught cold when the bell rang, and was dropped thrice within the first two minutes to trigger an automatic stoppage, thus providing a novel excuse for losing badly before a world wide audience.

 

Duran would've killed Joppy in his prime though lol.

Ummm....the leg massage thing is kinda' legit........but Hearns wouldn't have lasted much longer, he just would've stayed up longer and received more of a beating :rofl

Mate you realise that Hearns hushed that up AND the fact that he broke his hand off Hagler's head in the first round. He didn't want to take anything away from Marv's victory, so he kept it quiet. That was hardly a excuse. atsch

 

Regardless of what they say publicly, fighters compete at such an intense level, and a miraculuos confidence is such a part of their psychology that most will have at least one "good" excuse for nearly every loss. It is part of their makeup. To not do so is to be beatable, vulnerable, and where would that leave them when it was once again time to deny that to themselves?

 

It did get his arm caught for whatever that matters.

You might argue that if geting it caught was catastrophic then his plight was already dubious.

 

There was no way he was going to beat Tyson in that match. But the fact is that his arm did get caught in the ropes just as the seconds were ticking down to end the round. If it didn't happen, he would have ended that round on his feet. How well he would have recovered and adjusted during the rest period will always be a matter of speculation, but he very nearly weathered that storm against a deadly finisher. (45 seconds elapsed between the second and third knockdowns. Holmes did a lot better than Bonavena against Ali.)

 

People really like to be selective. He also talked about how his timing wasn't there and probably should've trained longer for this fight. Don King basically convinced him and he got some good money.

I like Galento's excuse when losing to Louis. He claimed that he wanted to "fight his fight. Rough and tough but they made me careful and didn't let me go out there doing what I wanted to. I knocked him down, I would've won the fight if I fought it right." What a character he was.

 

Holmes did mention, post fight, that Tyson should take some advice from an old champ, and sort his life out, before he destroyed himself...
