Fighters that I find hard to split.....

Here are some fighters that I have trouble choosing which one is best...

Ali & Pep
Hagler & Arguello
Marquez & Barrera
Leonard & Duran
Whitaker & Chavez
Mayweather & Jones jr
Langford & Tank Abbot

I'll take Ali over Pep, only for his power. Hard to compare a HW to a feather because what they face is totally different. If Ali didn't have some bang he would have been in a helluva lotta trouble.

 

By HWT standards, Ali certainly was no hard puncher, underrated puncher maybe but not a fearful one by any means.

Bill you should be a judge, they find it hard to split Whitaker and Chavez as well.

Agreed, Ali was not a big puncher for his weight class. And here I guess I'm still thinking of the Pep v. Armstrong question, because I do think Ali had the bang so that guys didn't walk right through him, all you can ask of a "boxer", a guy who spends most of his time up on the balls of his feet.

 

Yeah, those judges were ****ed up, Pea won the fight no doubt.... but its the rest of their careers that I find hard to split, I think (know) JCC was way more past prime than Pea when they fought, it would be a much different fight at 135 in their primes IMO. I do take their actual fight on board when comparing them but its not the lone thing to consider.
Pea does have the 4 weight thing to Chavez`s 3 but again thats minor when you consider Whitaker beat Vasquez & Chavez choose to tackle Whitaker, who had the harder job ?... Chavez obviously.

Ive always found it hard to place one over the other... to make it harder, I like both a lot.

None of those are difficult picks for me. I do have my own pairs I find hard to split in lists though.

Let me guess Butcher, you have Morales unanimously higher than Marquez but not Marco? Clown.

DINAMITA: The way Marquez has taken his career, do you see much opportunity for him overtaking MAB? He won't beat Mayweather in my opinion, and where would he go after that? He still hasn't got a signature win, really.

 

I don't see much chance of him overhauling Barrera's resume (which I don't know if you remember, but I made a thread about as I think it is an absolutely superb resume by contemporary standards), but the possibility is still there, it can't be written off. If Marquez beats Mayweather, he goes ahead of MAB IMO. I don't think he will beat Mayweather though. But even then, if he performs respectably against Floyd, then becomes Mexico's 4-weight king by taking a good belt at lww, and maybe has a career-definer against Pacquiao, or maybe Valero in time, he could definitely be up there. I don't think it will happen, but I won't write it off at the moment.

 

I can agree with all of that.

In the event Marquez achieves the unachievable by beating Floyd Mayweather in September, he will undoubtedly be higher than both Marco and Erik, in my estimation. Likewise, if he goes on to fight Pacquiao (which will only happen if they both win their next fight in my opinion) then that's another scalp that should lift him higher than Marco. Not to sure about Valero, the guy has not done anything yet. He's only a two weight champion because the belts are a complete joke.

Goodluck to Marquez though, I hope he goes on to beat Mayweather and Pacquiao. No hard feelings.

 

I hope he beats Mayweather. I hope the better man wins in a fair and brilliant decider between Marquez and Pac, whoever the best man is.
