Is he a 'World Champion' or just another 'World Titlist' in your eyes?:think I only say this as it seems if Khan does take the WBA strap from Kotelnik, he seems set to immediately vacate the title. Would Khan lose the accolades for not fighting Maidana? Then again, Kotelnik is a very good champion and did beat Maidana via SD so, with that in mind, surely a Khan victory over Kotelnik means more to the cynics?:think Another reason for making this point is that I've read a lot of split opinions on here over the last few days about what people would think of Khan if he were to win the strap and then to vacate it. No after timers, what do you say, 'World Titlist' or 'World Champion' if he wins tonight? Your thoughts...
He's been moved into a position to fight for a WBA world title. It's a belt rather than him being the best in the world. They are taking Kotelnik because they see him as an easy touch. They have knowhere else to go really. Should he win, he will vacate unless there is step aside money. Kotelnik isn't brilliant, but he's good enough. It beats fighting for a vacant WBO title I guess.
My thoughts exactly, Punter. The Khan camp have, inadvertently, set this up for themselves. I think the key aspect of the Khan product was and always has been thus far building up a 'future world champ'. Now that Khan's finally in that position, it seems they are unsure of what to do next if he does win the title. It's an odd one, in the eyes of a casual fan he will be a world champion but will that be enough to satisfy everyone? That said, if anything good does come out of a Khan win tonight, then at least we won't have to put up with Sky asking the same tiresome quetions about 'world title material'.
To be honest, the WBA no longer suprise me with their gimmicks and the 'interim' fight was no real suprise; I just think, like you say, Warren was suprised by it and it has potentially stuck a spanner in his future plans for Khan if he does win. Also, it would not suprise me if we were to see a return of the 'Super Champ' title in yet another weight division:-(. I mean, if Kotelnik does win then, from his point of view, why does he need to fight Maidana again for his title? The WBA aside, if he wins, Khan's next move is the most interesting one:huh.
I think it all depends on how he does at light wleterweight tonight. As Bunce said a knockout would be devasting for the lad, a loss on points would be less. If we see a Khan that beats kotelnik convincingly then he should stay at the weight. And personally I think challenge the Bradley v Campbell winner. He is not as good as sky are making him out to be that super fights await after this fight. Needless to say Bradley and Campbell are good oppenents. If Khan loses or wins unspectacularly then a step down to lightweight and a rematch with Prescott has to happen. It's his only demon so far.
He wont be world Champ if he doesnt fight other three belt holders or his Mando which i guess wil be maidana.
That revenge match has lost a lot of its lustre with Prescott getting beat last night. PS: I'd still like to see it though.
How is that different to Hatton's second reign as IBF champ or his brief stint as WBA 147 champ, though? It's an interesting one to call as, if he wins, Khan does beat the legit champ. In my eyes, if he wins and then dumps the belt, he will be just another 'world titlist'.
If he gives up the title he's not worthy of being called anything but a one hit wonder that is afraid of the challenges being a world champion brings. You can't just pick and choose, cherrypick the easiest possible fights as a world champion. The marquee fighters had to build themselves up to be in that position.
i only recognise the linear champion so Pacquaio the rest are just contenders Khan will be champion of the WBA which is just like being champion of the WBA not the world
