"Wrong strategy, wrong timing, wrong attitude".You forgot to add "slow feet,no reflexes".They may not be the main issues for you-being shot,etc.-but they are the main issues because that's when ducking Leonard decided to challenge Marvin, not one second before.
You say Ray deserves some credit for the win. Why?NEVER in general boxing conversation do you hear that Marvin was shot or even past it for that matter and Leonard was biding his time, waiting for Marvin to be past it,even though even you alluded to it yourself. What you always hear is what a great performance on Leonard's part it was.Usually "masterclass" is one of the expressions.First off,it wasn't that great of a fight. It wasn't Leonard's best fight. And it was easily Marvin's worst, and it was still a close fight.Secondly,Leonard was past it and Marvin was shot and the only reason it was compelling was because it was between 2 ATG legends and the hype and drama were components that were as big as the action itself. The biggest problem is that Leonard at least 90% of the time gets "credit"for pulling off one of the greatest "upsets" in history when it was actually one of boxing's biggest conjobs ever.In his day,Leonard was probably in the top 3 or 4 ever in the history of the welterweight division,he was that good,in my opinion. But he simply does not deserve credit for this "victory".He does deserve kudos for his con and his smarts, though.
I find it a bit disapointing when you look at a fighters resume and under wins there is names that should not be there, as they would not have gotten those wins if the fighter was prime, unfit etc... Calzage having a "win" VS Jones Jr, Macho Comacho having a "win" VS Leonard & Duran and to a lesser, Leonard's "win" over Hagler.
Spot on:good But don't expect some of these clowns on here 2 thank you 4 exposing them 2 their simplicity:smoke
Well just for starters claiming Hagler was "shot" and you agreeing puts you both into the non entity basket on this one. Lets call it "haters haven" shall we.
Same old for you because you dont like to hear it but it's really what it all boils down to. A fighter cant fight when he's toothless any more than the quarter back can't run with a pulled hamstring. Can't accept facts can you?
Sad but so true:yep What i've observed over the years & at Leonard training sessions is that the majority of his fans/followers are what i'd label as "Celebrity fight fans" who in the main ai'nt got a real background knowlege ov the man or sport never mind who his opponants might be. Not all mind you but most, i have 2 say that as my son only recently confessed 2 being a Leonard fan:fire
Well, all fighters getting old, including Sugar Ray Leonard. but in this fight Hagler wasn´t shot, Perhaps he wasn´t as good as before but neither was leonard. This is one of the best fights ever in my opinion. The Predator
My mistake as i should have put 99% spot-on IMO, Time had just caught up with Marvin, but the rest of the post i agree with, i would'nt say Hagler was "Shot" as in is generally accepted as "Finished/Washed up"
Yes,I hate Leonard's guts,no question about that.I've already written about that and when I started disliking him-just at the end of the 1976 Olympics. But with all due respect,John,if I have written anything in my contris that wasn't true, please tell me what that would be.
Sure I can, just not your version of the facts. Now you're comparing Hagler to a hamstringed quarterback. I mean honestly...
