His Debut was poor but he said he will prove critics wrong and he's shown that he can box properly. I have said a few times i don't rate Sutherland and felt DeGale's better and agree Sutherland would be tailor made for Chunky.
The booing was completely unreasonable though :-( I think he's just a naive kid, he seems very impressionable but harmless overall. Yeah he needs to toughen it up a bit, but I don't think his reactions to things like that are indicative. A tough fight either brings out the warrior in a fighter or the quitter in a fighter, I don't think its something that can be judged from what a fighter does outside the ring. Pauli Malignaggi looks like a whinging ***** outside the ring but he takes his licks.
Yep, I was thinking something similar. I can see DeGale doing well against a limited, aggressive fighter who comes straight foward, head first and hands down, but if you get an aggressive fighter who zig zags in behind the jab, someone with good feet who cuts off the ring and has a good sense of space, DeGale wouldn't do well against those types of opponents. I don't think it would take much to knock him off his game, and when that happens I don't think he has the adaptability or toughness to cope.
I agree sometimes we judge fighters by there ways outside of the ring but boxing brings out a different side to fighters. Just look at a fighter like Miguel Cotto the guys quiet and humble but fights like a beast...Manny Pacquiao springs to mind aswell and as you said Malignaggi is a flash guy looks like he snap in two from a punch but has a great heart. James is a tongue and cheek lad who's a bit soppy. I like the lad to be honest. The booing was wrong aswell i wasn't impressed that night i must admit i thought he boxed really poorly by his standards but he's actually learned and wanted to improve that must say something about him.
The booing was totally unreasonable, and he does have talent. I just don't know how much substance there is to go with the style, I don't know how much content there is behind the basic stuff that he does very well. That said, of all the fighters I do think DeGale is the one who will grow and evolve the most radically over a fairly short period of time. If he can properly determine his style, and then refine that style in a really methodical way from fight-to-fight, plus add a little more grit, then I think he could do well for himself as a pro.
I've been really impressed with DeGale, I missed all the olympics so I never knew why people didn't think he would do well but certainly after his debut hes looke great. Not sold on Gavin or BJS yet, Saunders needs to drop some weight. Think George Groves will be DeGales biggest British rival
Probably because in the Olympics he didn't have proper punching form. He cuffed a lot of shots, 'point scorers'. He looked more like a fencer than a pro boxer. It was pretty obvious he was physically talented and a natural counterpuncher though.
gavin really impressed last night , think he has adapted the best out of the 4 so far he picks his punches well and dosent waste much at all and also seems to have a bit of power degale looked impressive aswel but healy is limited and the hasnt got a great chin , i know moore , lee , smith , hall took longer but im sure if they went for the kill as quick as degale did they would have finished it just as early saunders i thought was impressive aswel but dos look a bit chunky and slower then the other too jefferies wont go futher then domestic level , i feel he is too rigid and stiff looking , i wasnt really impressed with him in the ams either
Unless 'chin' encompasses body it wasn't much to do with Healy's chin really. DeGale just proved he's got more pop than people think when he blasted him quicker than a guy like Moore, because Moore really can pack a punch. There is more to come from DeGale's 'lack of power' I'm sure :hey
by "chin" i mean body , im not saying degale has no power but once moore and lee and hall went to the body of healy they all got the ko , im sure degale watched tapes of these fights and knew to go straight to the body
True. But I don't think DeGale is a natural bodypuncher so he must be working on getting more leverage on his punches to do that.
Personally I believe Gavin to be the better. Wouldn't put it past the 3 of them to eventually win a 'world title' bet you'd get good odds on that !
