Why in the hardest hitters list are guys like Marciano and Dempsey always so high up? These guys must give way 20 -30 lbs to modern era guys.

Make no mistake Dempsey and Marciano hit pleanty hard. They were inflicting sick damage on their oponents.

Having said that there is a tendency to confuse power and effectivness. It might be that their speed and technique (functions of their smaller size)exagerated their perceived power.

I don't think it is necisarily a given that the hardest hitting 230 lb fighter hits harder than the hardest hitting 200 lb fighter. I think that above a certain size you are pushing the limits of the body mechanics and the fighters cannot commit their weight to a punch as effectivley.

Punching power is a mysterious think and their is often little ryme and reason to it. My advice ios to be sceptical of the claims made for the power of these smaller heavyweights but be open to the possibility that it might be comparable to some of the bigger guys.

These guys were seriously in shape, not like many of these fat heavyweights.

most of the modern era guys are 20-30lbs overweight and slow, no snap on their punches. I've never heard a compelling argument for flab-generated power.

Very good point. I think that a fighter should get to his best weight where he does not comprimise speed, snap, and stamina. There comes a point where extra weight becomes extra luggage and does not enhance the power. I have seen fat era's where fighters were sluggish and ill conditioned and I have seen fighters that were fit. People say that fighter weighed 200 lbs he should have been a crusier but there are fighters that have natural heavyweight power. Dempsey was one, Marciano was one and Louis was very fit on the Big side of that group but small waste and cut. joe was very efficient in his prime, every punch counted and Joe was a perfect specime in that division

Only white people think Marciano and Dempsey are hard punchers, Serious boxing fans who arent white know the truth and that is these fighters were jokes.
