He is certainly one of the more interesting prospects coming out of the former USSR right now, the other being Dmity Pirog. I hope Shumenov does well as he seems to have the right mentality and the physical tools to be something special.

Beibut Shumenov goes for world title with just 8 pro fights!

Beibut Shumenov, 25, is the fastest rising young talent today. He started his pro career just a year and a half ago but fought Donnel Wiggins in his 4th (TKO), Montell Griffin in his 6th (shutout UD), Epifanio Mendoza at his 7th (UD) and Byron Mitchell at his 8th fight (TKO) and he looked very impressive. Beibut relies on aggression a bit too much and still rather untested in deep waters as he could fight his fight so far, but the Kazakh fighter, managed by himself and his brother, is going to take advantage of the Light-Heavyweight division's current weakness at the top.

Gabriel Campillo (18-2) has just pulled out an upset victory vs. a very drained Hugo Hernan Garay to win the WBA LHW title, and that's a great opening at top for Shumenov, who lives and trains in Las Vegas.

The fight is going to take place on August 15 in Kazakhstan, and that means we can forget about international broadcast yet again, which is a shame. With the super impressive resume in just 8 pro fights, Shumenov's biggest problem is not getting live TV opportunities, and he's partially to blame. He said in an interview he doesn't want to get too much air time because of his still existing weaknesses, but if you don't fight on TV, you don't exist, that's the harsh reality in today's professional sports. Winning a LHW belt inside 10 fights would be a HUGE achievement, but what's next after that? I don't think any of the big names would go near him. He has to put international TV deals together and possibly look for a promoter after August 15, whether he wins or not. Young fighters desperately need good promoters who can put great deals (TV, hype, press connections, sparring and of course money) together.

Anyways: Good luck Beibut Shumenov! :thumbsup

Can't wait to see how this one turns out.

I haven't seen too much of Shumenov but I love his ambition and he's obviously something special. Hopefully he can win this, then go after Erdei. If he unified two titles by his 10th fight, it would be nothing short of incredible.

Yeah that would be something special, add that to the fact that Pascal's now got the WBC belt, Cloud is fighting for the IBF and Dawson's kicking about then maybe 175 isn't as barren as most think.

A lot of people may not have heard of him, but he is very impressive. This may be too big of a step too quick but he is damn good.

Some quotes from the Shumenov brothers:

“I’m so excited to be fighting for the WBA World title,” Beibut said. “Fighting at home in front of my family, friends and fans makes it even more special for all of us. Campillo showed that he has the heart of a lion by going to Garay’s country and taking away his championship belt. This is a tremendous opportunity for me. I’m honored to be fighting for such a prestigious world title.”

“We’d like to thank Gabriel Campillo, his team, and promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, for accepting our challenge when so many others didn’t,” Chingis noted. “We made formal challenges to all of the world light heavyweight champions, but Campillo was the only one to step-up and make it happen. We’re particularly grateful for him agreeing to make the fight in Kazakhstan. We’d also like to thank the WBA.”

I cant believe people are actually slagging off his record! Absolutely amazing. My hats off to the guy, well done for taking on the calibre of fighter he has so early in his career. Old Montell Griffin or not. Good luck to the guy.
