I never really read of Liston running down his opponents outside the ring.

I saw him show sportsmanship to defeated opponents.

Of course he intimidated most opponents with his "evil eye" stare before the fight.

I think Liston gets a bad rap.

He did make fun of some of the opponets he beat (for example nicknaming Albert Westphal "Quickfall") but you never saw him try to bully or intimidate opponents after the fight was over unlike Tyson and Foreman would.

The same Tyson that helped his fallen opponents get to their stool and who became good friends with Tyrel Biggs?

Liston beating up a policeman and then dumping him in a garbage can afterwards to me qualifies as "out of the ring behavior".

I think my point is rather obvious. The videos show Tyson hitting opponents after the bell and while they're on the canvas, even when the fight has already been stopped, as well as threatening to hit an opponent while he is down and him laughing about an unconscious opponent. Not to mention the ear biting incident, attempt at breaking Botha's arm, etc.

But that policeman didn't qualify as an opponent.

Hitting after the bell is something else than resenting them after the fight, which is what the thread was about. The ear biting incident and breaking Botha's arm, again, is DURING the fight. Read the thread: "outside the ring".

I heard he made a few comments about Cus D'Amato prior to getting a shot at Patterson. To be fair Cus said some things about Sonny too

Liston doesn't seem a bad guy outside the ring. It's pretty well known that he loved kids, for example. Years ago, on another site, I spoke to a guy who as a kid always hung around Liston in the gym.
He said Liston was a really great guy with kids and was always smiling and fooling around with them. He'd buy them ice cream and such on occasion from time to time.

Obviously there is no way to prove whether he has teliing the truth or not, but he seemed like a genuine poster and he came up with tidbits about Liston that seemed believeable.

Read more about Sonny...he WAS a bad guy outside the ring. He was a labor "goon" for one thing, and had to bust heads. He also didn't get along with cops too much, and it wasn't always the cop's fault.

Oh, definitely. I'm not claiming Liston was a nice guy...just a guy with a nicer, overlooked side, that's all.

EDIT: actually, I must apologise. I did say 'Liston doesn't seem like a bad guy outside the ring.' Bad choice of words. Maybe I should have said 'such a bad guy all the time.'
