Mmm...it's an interesting alternate universe. I wonder who would be 'the man' if Tyson wasn't around? There isn't anyone who really stands out in the late 80's scene as the guy to beat all comers. Fearless prediction: Tim Witherspoon still doesn't get a title shot.
but seriouly though this is a good question but i dont think the division would be mch different cause spinks i see unifying the division and then i see evander moving up and beating spinks beofre losing them to riddick bowe then they would still pass to moorer then forman and eventually to lewis and fast forward to today and the klitchkos would still be on top the only difference i see there being in the history of the division is there would have been less title holders
Bottom line? You would have a fairly ordinary era untill Holyfield came allong. The lineal tite would either disolve completely into the alphabet mess or change hands multiple times producing some aditional weaker lineal champions depending on whether Spinks was tempted to fight again. You might well see Spinks Holmes III.
Tucker unifies beating Berbick and Smith in 87. Mega fight with Spinks in 88 which he edges. Rematches Douglas in early 89, again wins a close one. Late 89 faces Holyfield wins in fight of the year. Rematch in early 90 Holy gets the victory. Holy wins rubber match in late 90.
No but Don King might get a tournament together (as happened). Sombody would have to win it and then Spinks would have to either face them or stay retired.
I can't see anyone (not even Spinks or Witherspoon) emerging as the dominant king in this frustratingly inconsistent era. My prediction is that the title remains fractured until Holyfield comes along at the end of the '80s and cleans house.
