He had 22, he went 19-3. 2 of the losses were the KO losses to Wells, adn the 3rd was the DQ loss to Bobick.
Alex Ramos was stopped by Poncho Carter Aaron Pryor was stopped by Norman Goins(?) Tony Tubbs was stopped by Igor Vysotsky(but lasted the distance against Teo Stevenson). Mitch Green was stopped by a freak cut by a lower-level opponent that cost him the 1978 NY Golden Gloves. Mike McCallum was kayoed by Andres Aldama, I believe. Tyrell Biggs and John Tate was stopped by Teofilio Stevenson.
And Sanders himself was flattened in one round by a guy called Alan Saffy in the amateurs. Sanders took the full count.
He was definitely down 7 times in one fight, after allegedly eating a dozen bananas before the bout. (According to Louis himself.) Something tells me it wasn't his first amateur fight though...I'll check it out and hopefully, if I remember this thread, come up with the specifics.
Marvin Hagler was knocked out cold in one round not long before he turned professional. Only joking :thumbsup
I think the bananas story was for his first professional fight where he won but looked stiff and nervous. And yeah, the one where he was down seven times was from some kind of competition I think, not his first fight.
Here are the details of the Louis fight in question: He was knocked down seven times by a fighter called Johhny Miler, in a three round amateur fight at 175 pounds. Louis did manage to last the distance though. There is some debate as to whether this was Louis' amateur debut or not. Source: Joe Louis, the Great Black Hope pages 32-33.
Ask the Cubans, they take pride in keeping a record of any ranked fighter beaten by one of their countrymen. Bobick (a favourite for the 72 Olympics) was flattened by Stevenson. Michael Dokes was alleged to have run like a thief to avoid the same fate, the crowd in some Pan American competition displaying their displeasure, post fight.
