is the best route to take regards travelling

    1. organise everything independly, ie , book flights and hotel yourself

    2. go through a travel agent for flights and perhaps also hotel

    3. use a package deal for everything (unlikely due to the pricing)

so whats the best way to do it, and your personal experience

    I'm a travel agent.

The best way to do it is to go to somebody like Trailfinders and build up your own package. This way you get reduced airfares. Hotels are cheap in Vegas anyway so it's all about getting the airfares down. With the package airfares, you have to book a hotel in conjunction with it so you just need to know what type of hotel you want... if you already know where you want to stay then that's even better.

The other benefit of a "package" is that you get much more financial protection from the likes of ABTA, ATOL etc which safeguards your money should any supplier goes into financial difficulty. If you book it all independently, you don't get that same protection and you'll probably pay more money.

Sometimes the package rates aren't wonderful so the agent will have to book it all independently like yourself. You'll end up paying a few quid more than sourcing the stuff yourself on the internet but not enough to worry about. You get CAA protection and somebody to speak to if things go pear shaped.

Packages are the way forward. And you can usually just pay a deposit and then leave the balance until 2 months before you go.

BA are also starting a direct service to Vegas from the end of October so you'll now find a bit of competition for Virgin.

OK, it may be cheaper for you to get some cheap flights with Ryanair to London and start the package from here. I know a lot of people do that from Ireland.

Basically, airlines give agents reduced airfares for a variety of reasons but essentially a package fares "hides" the price of the flight. So if an airline wants to give a better promotion to somebody without treading on other people's toes, it's a very effective way.

I'm sorry but you are exactly the type of person who is easily going to come a cropper at some point. I would severely advise against this form of action.

I'm not after anyone's business here so you can take my advice or leave it. If you book everything seperately in these financially difficult times with airlines on the brink of bankruptcy then you are leaving yourself wide open to all sorts of problems.

I severley doubt that your "saving" was the best value at the time of booking.

Whatever you do 1000% stay on the strip. If a hotel is cheap, its for a reason, its miles away.

Decent and reasonalbe hotels bang on the strip our Treasure Island, Ballys and New York New York.

Although i have heard MGM are doing all inclusive for $38 a night at the moment.

Oh and fly non direct is about the worst thing in the world. **** being on a plane for 18 hours.

True dat. Changing planes in the States is the worst thing to do. Also, Planet Hollywood are running promotions where you get a free upgrade to a "Fountain View Room" (opposite the Bellagio fountain show), a free bottle of spirit per night (750ml bottle of whiskey, vodka, gin... your choice) and $50 worth casino chips.... great location on the strip too.

Thanks for the info POW :good you sound like you know the score.

I've been to vegas for a fight before and did it myself without too many probs, but all ATOL stuff is worthwhile with the airlines all going financially pear shaped.

I booked the MGM Grand from GTAhotels.com, it seemed cheap at the time.

I think I've persuaded my girlfriend that we should book a holiday around Pac- Cotto in November. She agreed as long as we go to Cancun or Hawaii or somewhere afterwards. Happy days hopefully. Bit nervous still, I hear the fight tix will go on sale mid August.
