Who do you got in this, another anticipated fight of the year?

Pound-for-pound #1, six-division champion, and current The Ring Magazine/IBO Junior Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao

    or

Three-time World Champion, former WBO Jr. Welterweight Champion, former WBA Welterweight Champion, and current WBO Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto

Breakdown the styles, strategy, and who you think wins...

Well Cotto wont be as anorexic as DLH or as stupid as Hatton. Cotto can box and he can cut off the ring pretty well so if Pac decides to trade or to hit and run Cotto will be there. I know this is an awful comparison but when Jennings tried to use the hit and run technique he was eating jabs going in and getting body beat on the way out.

No, it's actually a very good one... Jennings, and everyone else who has ever tried to pull that **** with Cotto - genuinely skilled boxers included. The playbook on Cotto says you can't beat him trying to get cute. Pacquiao is peppy, but he better plan on being highly offensive if he wants to help his chances. I can't imagine what Freddie Roach is dreaming up. Fascinating just to think about it.

Y'know, if Cotto goes on the defense ala Margarito I think he could do very well. I don't think Cotto's going to come forward for Pacquiao, I think he's going to be a little more intelligent than Hatton and let Pacquiao do all the offensive stuff and counteract him, which could work very well. It may just come down to how quick Pacquiao is and how much his work troubles Cotto.

Actually I think Pac opens up Cotto's eye and the doctor stops the fight.

what a helluva thing, i too wonder what roach has in mind

its hard to pick pac with any intense confidence at least at this point, as a fan, i can see him winning but laying money down is a whole different story

i will be studying and seeing if pac is a sensible pic, emotionally, if i decide that cotto is the way to go, i will probably just lay off because i am too much of a pac fan to root against him at this point

the first thing that keeps crossing my mind is that pac cannot have a close fight with cotto, he can't be in a close grueling mano a mano fight with this man because cotto is a naturally bigger man, not that its pac's style to simply stand there swinging and getting hit, but what i mean is, it can't turn into some sort of grueling thing because pac will likely lose

imagine if its a chess game - if they start trading pieces pac loses, he has to "control the board" as they say, he has to be better in there

he is going to have to have incredible offensive moments and come away clean, then repeat the process, but Cotto is smart enough to fight carefully and wait for his chances............

    however.........

remember Zab Judah striking on Cotto? How well he was doing before he got hit low?

also Clottey simply can't turn it up a notch when needed, other wise Cotto would have been dust, Pacquiao can.

Really, its just that Pac is out of his element at welter clearly, that scares me, he simply cannot afford to take very much punishment from Cotto

Cotto has timing, intelligence and a kind of quickness about his punches, plus a lot of heart, but he is probably somewhat damaged goods and I think against the right opponent he might be taken out of there.

It is going to be an interesting fight. I favor Pacquaio, however, I concede I am blinded by my fanhood. You'll know if I really really think he'll win if I bet on it and at this point I am not sure enough to do that.

When thinking about they turning down Mosley at super drained weight of 140, I just can't believe Roach really thinks Cotto is THAT vulnerable. At 145, Mosley would most likely beat Pacquiao using speed, physical force, pressure and a lot of power, walking through PacMan's punches to chop him down on the inside. Still, if Pac chose to box beautifully, he could've pulled it off once again. I understand that in Roach's book Cotto is much more vulnerable with chin, stamina, cut and more or less defensive issues, but Cotto was able to land some nasty stuff on Shane on the inside which is a pretty bad news for Pacquiao. I think Roach, very important in the opponent selection part, is underestimating Miguel a bit here.

On skill vs. skill level it's not a really hard fight to pick, you gotta go with Pac based on the combination of speed, power, great movement and accuracy, but no one knows what happens if Cotto lands or starts to put on real welterweight pressure. Don't underestimate pressure and physical factors, it's part of the game. Cotto is much stronger and PacMan still got caught by a few clean shots in R2 vs. Hatton, so he's not exactly Pernell Whitaker on the defensive.

Anyways, it's a great fight but with a potential risk of a bad beating for one of the fighters, and if Pac will be the one to get it, well, a WW weighing 160 pounds on fight night can do a LOT of damage.

Ok major factors in the fight. Both guys can gwet cut but Pac gets more bothered by it than Cotto.

Pac's speed is a BIG advantage so the key to the fight will be can he get in and out without being timed by Cotto, Cotto's timing of guys is superb and can he stay off the ropes.

Perhaps a feint by Pac could draw a duck from Cotto leading to a viscous uppercut. But Cotto's jab also has the ability to dictate the tempo and mess up Pac's rhythm. Cotto has the edge in power, heart and strength. Pac has the edge in speed, defence, corner and stamina.

This is the meaning of a 50/50!

Has there been any word of Cotto hiring a new trainer? I think I read somewhere that he will remain with Santiago.........
