Joe Calzaghe must be able to see the future because he picked the right time to end his career. Calzaghe got out of boxing at the right time because i think he knew his time was up. In my opion i think Calzaghe's record was protected and his competion was very weak. Ask any boxing fan who he really beat in his career besides Lacy that was impressive. He was knocked down by both hopkins and jones in each of there fights. The hopkins fight was close and he was afraid to give hopkins a second rematch and jones is way past his prime. If jones and calzaghe both fought in there prime Joe would have been crushed. It's probably safe to say Joe would never have become a world champion at super middleweight while jones was fighing at that weight class. And if joe would have went down to middleweight hopkins would have beaten him also. Joe became a champion when the super middlweight divsion was weak and left when the divsion was getting tougher. Joe was not a puncher but instead a slapper with a horrible habit of standing square in the pocket. Joe made the right decision to retire.

WTF does any of that have to do with him retiring at the right time?

    Jesus, how dumb are you?

If Kessler wins this tournament, whats that got to say about Calzaghe?

Calzaghe is MUCH more better than people give him credit for.

Calzaghe may have retired at the right time, but your post is about six months too late. Did it take you that long to type it out?

Joe left the SMW division in 2008 and had two fights at LHW, so he didn't really leave when things were getting "hot". It's only getting hot now with some fighters moving up and others reaching the top level. Andre Ward was still green when Joe was active and had to go through surgery that kept him off for a long time, Dirrell was too green too, Jermain and Abraham moved up from MW, Froch only recently started to step up when he fought Pascal and is rising from there and Kessler is the only experienced one who made it when Joe was around and we know what happened there. Kessler is also the favorite to win this tournament, go figure.

    I disagree Calzaghe is/was a great fighter.

With a shameless photo of a human chicken fighting "gladiator" as an avatar I would recommend that you get the **** out of boxing discussions and stick to human chicken fighting.

There's no ****ing way in hell Calzaghe woukd "slap" Jones silly at MW. Jones destroyed an insanely skilled Toney in one-sided fashion at SMW when no one expected him to going in as the underdog, it was SO one-sided Toney had to come up with a book of excuses to save face. There's a reason Calzaghe PUBLICLY ADMITTED turning down Jones at SMW and it wasn't just money as he already said it was TOO risky, his chances of winning are low and the reward/money wasn't encouraging enough.

Calzaghe finished his career as a light heavyweight. What the **** does that have to do with a super middleweight tournament, or the division as it now stands?

He's the favorite so that says a lot already. Win or lose I don't think it will affect Calzaghe in any way, Kessler doesn't represent Calzaghe nor does Calzaghe represent him but a win will definitely remind people how good Calzaghe really is.

I'm pretty sure he didn't. Mainly because there was never an offer made and Jones hasn't fought at SMW since a year before Calzaghe v Eubank.

Jones did try to make a fight with Calzaghe as far as I remember and Calzaghe wanted it to happen in Wales with more money. I don't remember the details exactly but the documentary "No average Joe" explains that much better and that includes their past talks with Hopkins which wasn't Calzaghe's fault. All words come from Warren of course and before you say Warren is a lying dick or whatever he was still with Calzaghe at the time.

Why do so many people on ESB hate Calzaghe so much. The dude was a great and brilliant boxer, in terms of ring smarts and the ability to adapt during a fight he's one of the best ever. People act like he beat an old and shot Hopkins, thats bull****, Hopkins was ranked by almost everyone top 5 p4p at the time. Calzaghe may not have been the most exciting or physically gifted fighter but he was still great.

well butter my arse if it is'nt esb's very own little slice of frustration..

scar you are without doubt a first-class underling who i hold in the upmost distrust/contempt and loathing, indeed you are not fit to suck a fart out of a rats arse let alone mine..

now i am not going to entertain your need for playground frivolities nor do i value you/the *** in your avatar or indeed anything you have to say whilst breathing...

you wont get a reply im too busy on box rec trying to find mayweather a fighter his own size.

p.s you need to deal with the fact that calzaghe has been slapping your boys silly since he was a teenager, deal with it sweetie stop hankering on to james toney mythologies, captain hook would have got slapped silly had they met earlier,i pissed myself the way calzaghe carried jone's ass in that fight, now im not going to carry yours.

He might beat Dawson to become "real" LHW champion.
