How hard do you go at it in sparring? Soft? Average? Hell for leather? Have you ever be bashed up in sparring or witnessed someone getting bashed up? Do you take sparing as more just to keep sharp - or do you get invovled in gym wars?
I usually end up getting in a gym war, but most of the time I don't initiate it. The trainers in the gym like me to work with the newer people in sparring because I go easy on them, and work well with them. But when I spar the people around my level, I will usually see how hard they want to go, and more often than not, they want to take my head off. I haven't really taken a bad beating for a while now (I hope it stays that way), and I've never been dropped or anything. The worst that's happened to me was my knee buckled once.
fight like i would in a normal fight,, although if i hurt my sparring partner il take foot of the gas!
I usually try to go pretty hard. I've gone down once sparring in London from a body shot and I put one of mine down with a body shot here in the US. If you're not going hard, I don't see the point. Make it as much like a fight as you can.
I've been dropped a fair few times over the years, mainly due to me being the only southpaw in my area, so I always got the call to spar if anyone had an upcoming fight with a southpaw. Most of the time I was put in with guys bigger than me, so ofcourse i got dropped/hurt bad a few times. To go hard or not to go hard. Depends on a lot of factors - what are the goal of that particular sparring session? Also depends on the skill level/experience of the fighters. In general, we'll only allow hard sparring if its absolutely necessary. Hard sparring can take a hell of a lot out of you, too much of it can be a very bad thing.
iv had my jaw touch my ear and culdnt eat anything for a day.beta of going at it hard so when it comes to a fight it isnt a shock and u dnt panic.
i used to go in with all the new guys. and its funny they cant punch properly and you make them look stupid with little taps of punches while they throw bombs taht drift past you by millimeters, they get angrier and angrier i spar pretty hard these days, been dropped once in sparring from a left hook to the ribs, only time. In our gym we work on that punch alot so if i get hit there now i suck it up and move. Havnet been dropped in a while but i stopped 3 guys with left hooks to the ribs recently
i almost was tonight with an overhand right to the very top of the head in the 1st but clinched and survived the distance
Although I agree with your point in principal, trying to simulate what goes in in a fight can be very difficult. Yes, you can spar people who are stylistically similair to your opponent, you can turn up the intensity etc, but it rarely translates to what happens come fight night. In the gym, there is little in the way of pressure - come fight night, your mind can play some nasty tricks on you, and no sparring in the world will save you from this. What does help is experience - a cool head on fight night is built by fight night experience, and there is no subsitute. You build your mind in the ring. Your composure improves as you gain experience, and the composure is a by product of this experience. Gym wars are good for conditioning, but not much else imo. Think of it from a tactical point of view - you have one fighter who is going hell for leather right from the first bell, and you take another who is calm, composed, picks his shots and systematically breaks down his opponent - my money goes on the 'smart' fighter nine times out of ten. Come fight night, if you fight fire with fire, it can backfire on you badly. Train as you fight, and my advice if you are met with pressure, outbox it, be it in sparring or on fight night.
sorry you know we had the plan to only do 4 3 mins and then another 4 3mins against another guy thats all i ment by the distance
I was going to say, if you're going int osparring with the intent of a winner and a loser and all that; that's not really how it's supposed to be.
i did the other week with 5 different sparring partners 2 min rounds each continuously with no rest for a half hour :good
The last new guy I was in there with made all sorts really angry faces, some of the meanest I've ever seen, and I thought it was hilarious. I don't hit them hard, but I'll tap them, counter them, push them around. I only start out sparring hard when I know the other person is going to do it, other wise I usually just go at the level the other person does.
