Many people have the opinion that Mosley is a Top 3-10 Lightweight. Let me start off by saying that Shane was a terrific lightweight, he had excellent speed and power and obliterated his competition with ease (32-0 30 KO's). But, as we all know looking good in a division isn't the say all. Competition and achievement at the weight also count for a lot. Let's analyze Mosley's best competition at lightweight:

Is this a Top 10 Lightweight resume??? I have to seriously disagree. Not to mention, he didn't unify the division like the likes of Pernell Whitaker, Roberto Duran, Ismael Laguna, and his other counterparts have. Also, his resume at that weight can't hold a candle to the fighters (most I will list later) have defeated.

In Conclusion, Mosley is NOT a Top 3-10 Lightweight, Top 15-20 in my book. Here is list of fighter's I place ahead of Mosley or have a legit case:

    Roberto Duran
    Pernell Whitaker
    Benny Leonard
    Ike Williams
    Joe Gans
    Packey McFarland
    Sammy Angott
    Freddie Welsh
    Tony Canzoneri
    Lou Ambers
    Ismael Laguna
    Carlos Ortiz
    Ken Buchanon

good points but I actually think lightweight Mosley has the goods to beat a lightweight Duran but these were different eras hes not a top 10 lightweight by any means at all i would rank him 12 or 13 if i had to rank him because he wasnt really challenged at lightweight almost none of his fights went the distance there so that says a lot

My answer is not a full-on YES, but it is closer to a YES than it is a NO.

Is Mosley an overrated lightweight? I'm not sure, no-one can be, because he is an UNPROVEN lightweight.

He may have been that good, but he never fought even ONE top-class lightweight. He fought some decent comp, but no-one good enough to justify his general rating as a lightweight. His comp at welter has been far, far better.

I agree that he looked wonderful at the weight, but it's easy to look good fighting John Brown. His resume is almost non existent, which is why I believe he can't be placed in the elite of what I believe is the deepest weight class in the history of the sport. Good point though, their is no way to truly tell if he would've earned that placing due to comp.

i think everybody remembers how much of a beast he was there physically, and automatically assume he would wipe the floor with duran, chavez, sweet pea etc etc.....but the competition was kind of weak though, and he never struggled with anybody there so it's easy to say MOSLEY TKO TBA at 135, easy !!!

I have no problem with people commenting on how good a LW people think Mosley may have been, but the truth is we don't really know for sure. His resume is pretty average.

I wouldn't even put him in to my top 20 LW's on resume but don't have a problem with him being in on talent alone..or ranking him highly H2H.

We must remember that this is probably the most talent-laden division in history, so i guess overrated depends on where you personally rank him.

P.S To the guy above who said Mosley beats Duran...I really don't see how!!!!

I picked no but I guess that I never really thought he was rated all that high. I see him as a lightweight about the same as I see Roy Jones as a middleweight. Looked extremly impressive and nearly invincible in his short time there but didn't really do much (although Roy at least has the win over Bhop). Based on what we saw you probably wouldn't wanna place too much of a wager against him but he is unproven.

Agree with DINAMITA on this one, on the one hand he hardly ever lost a round at 135lbs during his stay there (to my knowledge anyway) and a record of 32-0 is pretty good, however his lack of quality opposition at the weight is a major factor which needs to be considered. I'd probably have him just inside my top 10 as i feel he is one of the best Head to Head fighters, however as rating fighters H2H is purely subjective i can fully understand if people place him further down in their rankings.

Mosley would've given anyone hell at LW. He was huge at that weight, had sickening power, and way faster. Yes his resume was average, but he beat those guys the way he should have. No way is he overrated.

History is unfair to some fighters, who simply never have the chance to measure themselves against the same high caliber fighters as others do.

It's fair to say that Duran, Whitaker,...etc. would be 32-0 against Mosley's same competition, but there's no way to know how he would do against their competition.

But who else had his strength and speed at that weight?
