Was Roy Jones Jr great or just very good and marketed well?

very true. he relied on pure athleticism and talent. which will get you VERY far but not when those gifts leave you. look at ali and mayweather: two of the smartest fighters i've ever seen. when their tools dulled, their minds and technique made up for it. roy couldn't: he never learned how to just BOX

Interesting, I didn't know being "VERY FAST" and having good reflexes was all that's required to become the fighter of the decade. You let the cat of the bag on that one, mi amigo!!

well you can say what you want about minimizing risk and about john ruiz...but a guy who won the golden gloves at light WELTERWEIGHT fought for a piece of the hw championship and won when he weighed under 200lbs...john ruiz can be thrown under the bus all day long, it doesnt change the fact that no one else is doing that today...but roy did at 193lbs (and yeah ive heard the story about the scales pre-fight)

what kind of idiotic question is this

anyone with a freakin set of EYES in their HEAD could just watch one fight of roy's and understand that you are dealing with someone very very special

he fought james toney when toney was considered by many to be #1 or #2 P4P and arguably WON EVERY ROUND... none of the rounds were even particularly close

hells yeah he was. one of the best h2h fighters EVER. toney was completely dominated, hopkins was outclassed and the fight with richard hall is one of the scariest things i've ever seen. it was like a cartoon (definitely worth a look!)

hmm.. nobody thinks RJJ's a Hopkins-like technician but he certainly did have boxing skills. he got away with his unorthodox style because of his his physical gifts. kind of like PBF in that sense whose style incorporated incredible athleticism(but on a lesser scale)

for example, counterpunching? i'd say rjj is among the best in that area. and rjj put punches together really really well.

agreed... i feel like the last fight roy was great in was when he fought clinton woods at the rose garden in portland... and woods say what you want but he has hung around a long time and proven to be somewhat of a legit fighter with some ok wins... and roy made him look mentally handicapped in the ring with those ridiculous combinations

i was just thinking that when i was discussing with someone the different between a holyfield and a jones. some fighters fade over time, some over one fight. when jones fought woods at LHW-brilliant. one fight later against ruiz-brilliant. then came tarver and he was NOT the same fighter that demolished woods

    Mayweathers tools have not dulled.

Roy was past his best in the year 2000, he went up to HW and beat Ruiz 3 years after that.

Jones was obvioulsy great, anybody who does not have him within their 50 best fighters ever needs their heads examined, for some that would be a very quick experience :yep.
