Was Roy Jones Jr great or just very good and marketed well?

both, but goes in the 'could have been' section along with toney, tyson and mayweather

 

there are some what ifs but by no means should his greatness be questioned: at 168 and 175 he was as close to perfect as we'll ever see.

 

i agree, as usual. and a lot of people just look at what they consider to be prime prize fighting years b/c for most people, that's all they see. but if you dig a little deeper, you see multiple golden gloves at multiple weights, a should be olympic champ (i don't know anyone who thinks he actually lost that fight)...mw champ, 168-175 like you said was as close to untouchable as ive seen in my life, and then hw champ...thats not a bad resume actually

edit to note that while he "lost" that olympic fight...i actually think he was awarded the best boxer award at the games

 

roy would've given that robot an ass whooping. he must've had the shortest arms i've seen on a boxer. g-man at mw/smw poses a bigger threat.

he beat better boxers in hopkins and toney anyway. though not at lhw.

 

g-man would have been great IF they weren't friends. never would have happened. and if light heavy was as stacked in jones' era as it was in spinks era we'd be calling him the 2nd greatest light heavy ever

for sure. and no one at the time really considered DM anything more than a paper champ. jones had good reason not to trust judges and DM offered nothing. still i'd like to have him on his ledger as he was the ONLY other real name out there at the time

 

Jones was never marketed well. He was possibly the greatest talent to ever lace up a pair of golves, robbed of a gold medal. He could have been much bigger in terms of a marketing sense.

 

As you can see Roy Jones is my favorite fighter ever. He was so fun to watch and still is, sort of. He was amazingly fast and had incredible reflexes with very good power in both hands. He was the best fighter of the 90's it's undeniable. I have Roy Jones in the top 30 boxers of ALL TIME.

Roy Jones has his share of bums for sure, but he also great names on his resume like....

A great fighter, the problem was he didn't want to do whatever it took to fight the other big names, otherwise he would've went to Germany and fought Darius M, and Roy would've won that fight clearly before 2003.

 

he was so good no one knew he had a weak chin cause no one came close to touching it. that pretty much says it all

Seriously, if you dont consider Roy Jones Jr. a great...in fact, more accurately an ATG...maaaaaaybe boxing isnt really the sport for you.
