I've been saying this for the last 2-3 years. Their killing it. Their getting old and long in the tooth they know that they've nearly fished the lake to death and now their mopping up the last remnants of whats left. Boxing is not going to last till someone takes control of its marketing.
Jeff, for someone like DeGale - how much more (or less) money do you think he gets from being on Box Office versus terrestrial (i.e. ITV)? Just using a basic pie in the sky number like terrestrial payment being based on 1% of viewers, versus sky box office of 10%: 10% of 30,000 sky box office subscriptions = £3,000 1% of 1m terrestrial viewers on ITV = £10,000 Which one would you rather go for? :good (caveat - i'm guessing the above assumption is wrong, else boxers who go straight on PPV like DeGale are just greedy clueless chumps. ....then again, irrespective of the above assumptions, maybe these boxers are just greedly little chumps. Afterall, PPV aside, Amir Khan would never have got his multimillion pound Reebok deal if it weren't for national coverage generated by ITV)
It's not surprising that it didn't sell, it's ridiculous to demand ppv for a fight like that. I paid for it but that was because the card as a whole looked a good one, it wasn't just to watch Khan, of course they didn't show some of the most interesting fights so I've learned my lesson there. I won't be buying ppv's again unless it's a massive fight. Khan really should be ashamed of himself for demanding ppv money.
I'm really glad to hear it bombed. How many people who paid for it actually enjoyed the quality of the show,it was the worst yet and unless Khans fighting a marquee name next (which is NOT a good idea) the figures will be even lower. This PPV **** is ruining his career...its so short sighted.
I said this on another thread that PPV is killing boxing. I dont mind paying for big fights but there was no way I was paying for the Khan fight when my local pub was showing it. I thought Khan would of done well with PPV with a lot of people wanting to see him KO'd and the big Pakistani support he has.
So would you order the Cotto Pac fight, Khan might be undercard? I think that would be worth paying for.
Yea ****ing right I'll be getting that and staying up to watch it because I am a fan of both cotto and pacman they are worth paying for I prefer to watch it at home but I am not paying to watch crap little fights the only fights that should be ppv should be the big fights. I agree that boxing should be back on itv look at benn and eubank both national Heros because everybody could watch there fights if they had been on ppv they wouldn't bo so popular. Boxing is a working class sport and working class people at the min are hard up for cash because of the credit and will not pay £15 for nothing fights
I'm not surprised it didn't do well with a main event consisting of a no body against a hyped up no body.
That really poor figures...... he should be getting about 100,000 at least....cant imagine haye doing anywhere near that .
It was another epic PPV failiure, how many more PPV disasters before they cotton on? I'm not be funny but if we're going to be honest a promoter is meant to promote right? So Khan goes from 10,000,000 plus viewers on his debut, to 30,000 viewers and probably 8,000 in the arena. Maybe another 30,000 on line. Thats a demotion. FW Demotions.
That's a real shame. It's a problem all-round for boxing PPVs...the automatic assumption that if it's for a world title it has to be on PPV. Several HBO and Showtime PPVs for American champions have still bombed horribly from this assumption. I really think free or cable tv should be the norm, and PPV for the truly special. It's become cheapened over the past decade and the numbers aren't good.
