Jones was managed & marketed horribly, & half of it was his own fault.

Jones was, at one time, getting $5,000,000 from HBO for fighting janitors, alcoholics, garbage men, postal workers, etc.

Jones was, at one time, calling out every mother****er in the world, and noone heeded the call.

Yes. Jones should have fought Michalczewski, but always refused not matter how much money he was offered.

Jones was a great fighter, no doubt...Jones beat a shitload of good fighters and also the two very best fighters outside of himself of his era in Hopkins and Toney, and did so EASY.

Problem with many of those that dont think highly of Jones is simple, they picked the guys that he did fight and labeled them as the ones that would have beat him. You can make all the lists in the world of guys that he didnt fight. However if you really look at those he did fight you will find in alot of cases he beat fighters that beat the ones that he was said to have ducked. While that dont mean that he would have also beat that other fighter I think that he should show that he wasnt scared to or likely to have ducked those fighters.

Another thing about Jones is that he fought most of his career above his best weight, and did so looking for bigger fighters.

It looks good to say that Jones didnt want to fight the fighters that the guy listed but the truth is, those were NAMED fighters as Jones was coming up, and Jones called those fighters out, many of those fighters were non-factors by the time that Jones was winning belts. the only one of the fights that REALLY should have happened was vs Daruisz. The rest are just some hater pulling names out of his ass.:good

he is great, but not in my mind a really big ATG. He didn't fight everyone he could have in his prime to prove he was no doubt great. But I think he was great, but nothing like Ali or Leonard. He was a guy a little like Floyd who handpicked. He was good and he demolished guys but he did not fight them all so to me he comes up short as this definitive ATG.

to speak for other people and say the sport is not for them is just an opinion. Maybe people who love the sport want a guy to fight them all and to put the sport ahead of them like Hagler and Hearns and Leonard and Duran did- or going further back Ali,Frazier,Foreman etc. Those guys put their heart into the sport in a way Roy Jones never did. Young people now think the Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather theory of being good- legitimately they are good, but they handpick. And in my mind handpicking fighters shows a lack of confidence. How does that show a great fighter? I grew up watching Hagler and Hearns and Duran and Leonard. That level was so high that when Roy came into boxing several years after the fab four, the difference in courage and confidence was so evident. Nowadays the handpicking is the norm.

He is like Floyd. He would have probably beaten Darius, but that question mark in his head made him rule it out. That lack of confidence is part of Roy, same as Floyd handpicks. They could beat certain people they never fought, I agree. But if they never fought them, then that tells me they have some question marks about themselves. And Roy was never in a great fight. SRL said once a fighter who is great has to have great fights. That is from a great fighters own mouth.

I guess they dont have sarcasm where your from...:huh

Anyway, to say Roy handpicked is a biased outlook anyway. The man's resume is stellar, yet nitpickers with agendas always seem to want to attempt to discredit it.

    Lets look at your example...

Hearns, Hagler, Leonard and Duran all fought each other and should be commended for it, as they were the biggest and best names of that era in and around each others weight classes.

Now please tell me who the top 4 guys were in and around Roy's weight class were? Hopkins, Toney, Mccallum and DM (if you can argue others, let me know and we will)? Now the only one Roy didnt fight was DM, who refused to cross the pond, as did Roy...and seeing what we all have seen over the years with fights in Germany, I dont blame him one bit. And why is always Jones that takes the heat for this fight not happening (because who else did he NOT fight during his time?), there were two fighters involved and two fighters refusing to budge...only one was the bigger draw, the bigger name, the more accomplished fighter and held more belts...really who should have been making the demands in the first place? Thank you...

Also, because Roy Jones held so many titles at his peak, there was this little business that many of the past fighters didnt have to deal with as much called mandatories (obviously it was still there, but like you I grew up watching those guys...I know we both know it wasnt as stressed and titles were stripped so freely as nowadays). The man held SEVEN TITLES at one point...so during long negotiations with the likes of Bernard Hopkins, he had no choice but to honor those mandatories or lose his bargaining power in those negotiations.

And before I leave you, Im gonna give you a list of names...

Hopkins, Toney, Mccallum x2, Hill, Ruiz, Woods, Tarver, Griffin, Pazienza, Gonzales, Sosa, Harding, etc.

Former MW champion of the world, former SMW champion of the world, former LHW champion of the world, former HW champion of the world.

I will say it again, and maybe you will be able to pull your panties out your ass and see the humor, if you dont think this man is a great, or even an ATG, then Im sorry, but either boxing isnt for you...OR YOUR BIASED AS ****!

    Thank you and goodnight!

    :hi:

Roy was not marketed well IMO. He should have been the face of boxing during his time but instead that went to Oscar, which is a shame because Jones was 10x the talent Oscar was. With that said he was great the best fighter of his era a H2H terror and would be dominate in any era.

Roy Jones Jr. in his prime was great. He was everything you looked for in a boxer. He could close the fight, counter, fight smart and entertain the fans while he did all of that but unfortunately Roy wasnt really tested he did fight and beat some great fighters convincingly but, he doesnt have that matchup that would put him on the same level as a Ali, Leonard, or Frazier. He had some great performances and some great wins but none of the wins that he had would put him among the elite in boxings pound for pound greatest similiar to how when people think of Ali they dont forget the battles with Frazier, the trilogy with Norton, and the fight with Foreman if Ali didnt fight in those matchups we would put him in the same boat as Jones, but really with Jones you cant really think of any epic battles to put him among the elite yes he did beat some great fighters such as Hopkins and Toney but those fights dont stand out much because it was during Roy's physical peak and early in both of their careers. Roy was great for a fighter that was marketed poorly and to this day his pay per view numbers are very low
