I want to address certain recurring topics in regards to various post about Pac's skillset. This is not a thread to denegrate Pac but to answer some of the biased fanatisized claims about Pac's prowess. What makes Pac such a formidable opponent is his speed and power. Speed and power are natural athletic abilities NOT SKILL. When Pac fought Barrera the first time he overwhelmend Barrera with those attributes. He did not outbox him he outfought him not with textbook boxing but with his natural ability. Again NOT SKILL. I am not saying that Pac has no skill because he currently does, moreso than in the past. Let's remember that Pac was nothing but double jab and left cross. That was pretty much his arsenal. He later developed a right hand. Pacquiao has good side-to-side movement and head movement but he still can't fight going back. Pac has a Roy Jones-esque thing about him in the regards that much like Jones it's the natural ability and god given talent that made him such a force and not text book boxing. So I think it's somewhat unfair to say that skill wise he is superior to Cotto. I think that hey may be superior in athletic ability to Cotto. However, when it comes to boxing aptitude; just having more tools in the shed I think Cotto has more to offer than Pac, but that is just my opinion.
Pac's skill has always been underated. Going back to 2001 he was already throwing counterpunches, uppercuts, right hooks, body shots, lead left hands, slipping punches, etc. He was one-dimensional in that he was always coming forward, not using his footwork as much. His strategy was one-dimensional, but not his offensive arsenal. In the first Barrera fight, how many times does Pac feint the right hand, lead with the left, and then come behind the left with a straight right? I saw that often. He's always been more than jab jab left.
He has improved. There is no denying that, but Cotto is a better technical fighter than Pac as per the OP.
He's not technically perfect and never will be. I'd say his boxing skills have gone from somewhere around 'decent' to actually 'very good' at this point. He's not Willie Pep, and he's not on the technical level of a Marquez. Decent skills + frightening physical abilities are a lot to handle. Too much for Cotto in my opinion.
I agree with most of your post but I personally do think Pac`s skills are at least on par with Cotto`s, maybe not in a textbook way but for eg. Whitaker never had a textbook defence, it was mostly natural ability that enabled him to get away with the impossible but he is frequently mentioned with the best defensive fighters of all time because, like Pac, that natural ability wouldnt mean **** if he never put in the work to develop skills to get the most out of that natural ability. Pep > Pac > Cotto (Thats p4p, I aint calling the Pac-Cotto h2h fight just yet, size could be as much a factor as skills/natural ability)
I'm sorry I'm still waiting on your response from a prior thread. Thanks. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157000&page=2
