Sam Sexton-Martin Rogan Rematch On For October This content is protected By James Slater: The first time they met the action was as exciting as it was controversial. Unbeaten Martin Rogan of Northern Ireland - the 38-year-old being one of the most enjoyable-to-watch overachievers of the last few years - lost his Commonwealth heavyweight belt in a thriller with 25-year-old Sam Sexton. As soon as the fight was stopped in the 8th-round (due to an enormous swelling that had closed "Rogie's" left eye) the debate started. Should the fight have been stopped? Was Sexton (who had spat out his mouth-piece to buy time in the fateful 8th-round) an undeserving winner? Why didn't Rogan go in for the kill when Sexton dropped his hands in the 8th? And so on and so forth. Now, however, as has been reported by the BBC, the rematch is on for October 9th; once again at The Odyssey Arena in Belfast. Hopefully this time the argument as to who is the superior fighter will be settled in a manner we are all happy with. Understandably, both men are raring to go in October, and both warriors are sure they will win. Rogan, 12-1(6), believes (as do many other people) that he was unfairly beaten last time out, and that only referee Dave Parris' officiating cost him the fight. This time, the 38-year-old part time cab driver says there will be no way Sexton will leave the arena declared a winner. "Everyone knows I won the fight and the referee saved him - I can't wait for justice to be done," Rogan said. "I just have to beat Sexton this time. I made mistakes last time and Sexton won't get that opportunity again, I am going to absolutely destroy the man. "I beat him with one eye, this time I will have two perfect eyes and I'm going to be coming at him like no-one has ever done in his life. There is nowhere for him to hide in that ring." It really does sound as though Rogan, usually a nice guy, has taken his first defeat badly. More so due to the manner in which he was beaten (no-one could really accuse Rogan of being a bad sport and a sore loser) the man who sensationally stopped big man Matt Skelton in yet another thriller is aching to get his own back on his young rival. Of course, Sexton, 12-1(5) has other ideas. Also speaking to BBC, Sexton said that this time he would knock Rogan out. "I out-boxed him in every round apart from the eighth," Sexton said. "He is just a brawler with no boxing skill and the only thing he's got is his strength, but that wasn't much to worry about. Remember, I took the fight in Belfast and went into the lion's den and beat him and now I'm going back there and will do the same again, only easier. "This time there will be no stoppage and he's going to get knocked out." Sure to be another hit with the TV fans and the ticket buyers, Sexton-Rogan II should also be a good, old-fashioned value for money scrap. Who wins? This time I think Rogan will get it right and pound out a points victory. Come on big Rogie:happy:happy
s Thunder in Tallaght, ***an Believes its his time This content is protected This content is protected By David Boyle: Life has had its ups and downs for Oisin ***an. Having moved to the USA and qualified as a PE teacher things took a turn for the worse for Oisin. ***an,who turned to boxing as a means of making some cash and getting home. Now at the age of 35 he is still going hungry even more so for the fight game as he has ever been. Its been a tough slog for ***an but one that he feels is going to pay dividends starting this weekend in Tallaght, Dublin were he fights for the IBF international Super Featherweight title and a place in the top 10 rankings. After his last two fights being at lightweight one a defeat due to a broken leg to new WBA lightweight champ Amir Khan, Oisin is moving down and he feels he is more naturally suited to the weight. Actually I was in the middle of training to get down to the Super Featherweight division when I got the call to fight Eddie. So I think its a bit of a mistake in picking me as I think that they thought I was going to struggle and come in weight drained but that is definitely not going to be the case, insisted ***an. . To listen to the man speak you can hear that ***an is so confident that he is going to be the winner on Saturday night, he makes you believe without doubt as well. Training three times a day, in the gym at 1pm, cycle at 6 pm and running at 8pm shows that he means business. There is going to be no man that has gone into the ring as prepared as I am for this fight, Its my time and now its do or die for me, explained Oisin. I feel rejuvenated and so fresh and with my nutritionist now on board I eat right and am getting the best results in the gym. Although ***ans mind is filled with Eddie Hyland he knows a win could lead to big things. A possible fight with WBC super-featherweight champ Humberto Soto could be on the cards, so a win is vital for me, at 35 there is no more time to be hanging around, said ***an. On Eddie Hyland, ***an commneted Eddie is a fantastic lad and a good friend of mine, however for this friendship will be put to one side and afterwards well have a pint or tw. As a fighter Eddie is very good and his dad has schooled all of the Hylands brilliantly.. However, Eddie has yet to go the championship distance and I feel that this is going to be a huge advantage for me, in going to make it a tough rough fight and its going to be a long night and my experience of going into the championship rounds will see me through, Oisin explained that there has been a lot of bad press in the Dublin media trying to brew up tensions between the two Dublin fighters, however ***an was quick to put the record straight. A lot has been said and written in the papers that is totally untrue and I respect Eddie more so that I do the likes of Khan(Amir) and Spadafora(Paul), ***an we both have had to work hard to get to this and a lot written has been bull, to say the least. Nothing has come easy in boxing for Oisin ***an, having only had three amateur fights he feels that he is still learning everyday and thats what keeps him fresh. With me having such a short boxing background it gives me a chance to still be learning at this stage of my career and keeps me hungry, were as I think Eddie may be in a bit of a rut at the moment and is bringing in new faces to try freshen things up ***an added. What I am looking for is a sponsor so that I can concentrate full time on boxing and not have to worry about working in between fights. I would come on so much as a fighter if I had the chance to fully put myself into my boxing and who knows were it could go, Oisin says with conviction. If I could get that then things will get going very quickly. From talking to Oisin ***an one does not get the sense of him being a veteran of tough fights and the excitement in his voice talking about this fight shows he is really up for this. One thing is for sure there is going to be Thunder in Tallaght come Saturday Night July 24, 2009
wat bout daniel jacobs i seen him out in las vegas when i was out 4 hatton pac man fight and wasnt overly impressed tbh i though he was a little lazy to be straight and i think its a figt andy could win if he applied himself right and would really kickstart his career but i know its not goin to happen
I just stuck every penny I have in my Paddy Power account on Oisin ***an - all £43.58 at 6/5. We shall see!
possibly because Murray is there now - possibly because Hyland was sparring up there - possibly because he was comfortable with the Sutcliffe set up. Not sure tbh
Ah man Paddy Power are offering Nenagh AFC to win the FAI Junior at 33/1, much better use of your money it's a cert Seriously though, after the weigh in today I'm starting to lean towards ***an.
