I go for my man Morales, he was awesome at 122, speed, power, excellent feet, threw every punch in the book well & often, mixed the boxing with the fighting really well, he had everything, the total package. Thoughts :think
Morales only had one close fight at 122 lbs vs another ATG fighter in his own prime, a 26 yr old Barrera & that was his last fight at the weight, he struggled to make weight. He put together 8 or 9 straight KO`s as champion & only his last 2 vs iron chinned McCullouch & a great Barrera went 12 rds, he never lost at the weight. He has a good shot at being rated the 2nd best ever after Gomez at 122, he was excellent at this weight, more so than the others mentioned IMO. Ps. suprised Calzaghe has had a vote & a mention, he usually cops a lot of **** on here... not suprised Pac has 3 votes tho despite having less fights at 130 as well as losing officially & unofficially to Morales & Marquez.
So you give credit to Morales for winning a close/disputed fight with Barrera at 126, but not to Pacquiao for doing the same vs. Marquez at 130?
Bill you know what i think of Morales, i'm ****in gutted that thread of yours died after i did that little post about him. But anyway i find it hard to say, the answer very well may be Pacquiao, even at 130, but i thought he beat JMM there so maybe that helps that thinking along. Calzaghe is a god choice though for me, people can always talk about the not proven thing in their opinion, but i find it hard personally. But Morales might be the answer, a force of nature at that lower weight.
I`ll take it you meant 122 rather than 126. I thought the JMM-Pac II fight was easier to score than the EM-MAB I fight, I gave Morales & Marquez both 7 rds & the fight vs MAB & Pac personally. Also... Morales completely dominated every other fighter at the weight, Pacman looked lacklustre vs both Larios & a past it MAB & lost to Morales in Erik`s last win of his career - & this was AT LEAST the same version that beat & drew with MAB & JMM. Ps. you cant even say that Morales at 122 fought worse comp than MAB at 126, JC at 168 or Pac at 130, it was at the very least equal comp & he was more dominant than the other 3.
For the record- I had the first 2 Morales Barrera fights in the opposite direction to the actual decisions. I had JMM winning the first Pac fight, Pac winning the rematch.
Most fans actually agree with you on 3 of those, the odd one out being Pac-JMM II, most (from what Ive personally heard & read) thought JMM won. Despite scoring 7 rds to Morales v MAB in their 1st fight, I really feel it was overall & judged as a whole (not rd by rd) a 50/50 fight with Barrera actually fighting the better tactical fight, it was Morales youthful energy & punch output that stopped Barrera from pulling away, he was ALWAYS answering back & in Marco`s face but Barrera stayed calm & patient, brilliant fight by both men & the best fight Ive ever seen personally. I wont go into Morales-MAB II, I gave Erik 8 rds, lets just leave it at that before I right a book. I never did a rd by rd on the 1st JMM-Pac fight but overall, a draw seemed fair. I scored the 2nd JMM fight to JMM, thought he took the last rd to stamp it. :good
Yeah i nkow, it seems a general consensus sort of thing that JMM won the rematch. Actually i thought i had all the rounds exactly the same as the commentators, but they had it for JMM and i had it for Pac! I thought to myself, 'what the ****?!', and then just put it down to i must have had it different to them because i was sure i had Pac by 2 points. Insane isn't it?! And yeah Bill, my fave fight probably is Barrera-Morales 1. I remember at the time of the third fight, i never wacthed it live, and the ring etc were saying it was the best of the series. I watched, and i thought 'good fight, nowhere near the action fight of the first unforgettable encounter though.'
Yes, the 1st fight was by far the best, followed by the 3rd, then the 2nd, which IMO was also a very good fight, it was mesmerising to me to see Erik & Marco boxing each other that way after the way they fought in the 1st fight, showed their versatility & proved they were the real deal, top 2 at the weight without dispute.... aahhh, happy days. 3rd fight had a bit of both, I enjoyed it right up until the point were the announcer says ` & new` :| I think Erik underestimated what Barrera had left going into that fight, the form he showed vs Hernandez prior & Pacquiao after that fight would have been good enough to beat Marco IMO, he saw them as bigger threats due to how MAB looked vs Pac... he came in to KO Marco rather than beat him, big mistake but I still rank him as a better fighter than Marco regardless - take it you coulda guessed that anyway :good
I go with Super Joe Calzaghe. He beat everybody in the division and schooled everybody he fought. He had it all, a Boxing brain, he was able to adjust to his opponent, great footwork, fast hands, just a magnificent fighter who doesn't get enough credit.
