This fight was very close and could've been awarded to either fighter. Here are my results: Round 1: Ali 10-9 Round 2: Ali 10-9 Round 3: Ali 10-9 Round 4: Frazier 10-9 Round 5: Frazier 10-9 Round 6: Ali 10-9 Round 7: Frazier 10-9 Round 8: Frazier 10-9 Round 9: Ali 10-9 Round 10: Frazier 10-9 Round 11: Frazier 10-9 Round 12: Ali 10-9 The fight was a draw: 114-114 Rounds 4 and 12 could be called even or could have gone for the other fighter. EDIT: If this were a Championship 15 Round fight, then Frazier would have taken a decision over Ali. If you look, Frazier was coming on strong and winning two rounds to Ali's one. If that pattern kept up, then he would have won.
I had it for Ali. Didn't like Muhammad's holding, but he can't be blamed really. New York times had it for Frazier
He did hold a lot in the fight. In my opinion neither fighter did more than the other to emerge victorious.
7-5 Ali. I don't think there's a controversy about this decision. Close but a definite winner. The ref should have warned Ali, which could have led to a point or two being deducted. But as it is, he won. The NY Times score was likely carded by Dave "I think Joe on his best night beats Ali on his best night" Anderson. He had Joe winning Round 1 of the Foreman fight too. :yep
You're knowledge of Red Smith mustn't be that great then. It wouldn't surprise me if he scored Terrell a UD winner over Ali too.
I don't know anything about him, aside from that someone was calling him a redneck in another thread about the same sort of thing.
He's not my favourite person either, but it wouldn't turn me into an assassin... As an aside, was there some sort of editorial issue with Ali at the NYT? That's two writers scoring what was the fight of the century for them at ringside who are apparently out to get him...did the editor or the sports editor have it in for him too? Anyone?
I don't have a scorecard handy, but I always felt Frazier either won or at least got a draw. Ali threw more combinations, but I felt Frazier's punches were cleaner and more solid.
None that I know of. Anderson was really good actually, I like his work. Smith was probably even better but definitely had an agenda when it came to Ali, mostly stemming from the Vietnam War.
