WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel has told reporters in Puerto Rico that Pacquiao-Cotto should have the WBO title on the line. This fight is between champ Cotto and no. 1 contender PAC and it's appropriate that a title should be on the line.

However Top Rank's Bob Arum, who promotes both PAC and Cotto, told The Philippine Star that Cotto is not willing to pay the sanctioning fee involved. Arum says the fee could be as high as $400,000 dollars. There is so much money at stake that Cotto does not want to risk his WBO welterweight title.

If the WBO welterweight title will be at stake and if PAC wins the fight then PAC will make history to become the first boxer to capture titles in 7 different weight divisions.

Do you think a title belt should be at stake for the PAC-Cotto fight?

Vote in the poll and discuss...

Not if it's held at 145, no I don't. I know it's only 2 pounds but if it's for the belt it should be at 147 imo.

This fight doesn't need a belt anyway.

I think even if there's a title at stake, this fight is already a sure GO... Definitely there will be a fight, title or no title...

I'm guessing WBO will lower the sanctioning fee to something reasonable, maybe $40K only...:D It's a cheap advertisement for WBO in this megafight...

    Imagine this scene:

Pac destroys Cotto. How can Cotto call himself a champion of the WW division if he is soundly beaten at a fight that is in the WW limits?

    Another point is this:

What does Cotto get out of this fight:
LEGACY, biggest payday of his life, massive exposure and the chance to fight the P4P Number 1 in the world. If he wins the option for HUGE HUGE HUGE fights against Mayweather and a rematch with Mosley/Marg.

What does Pac get out of this fight
    (if there is no belt):
Beating a young, prime strong WW.

No matter who Pac fights at moment is going to make huge money, The belt NEEDS TO BE ON THE LINE for the fight to be worth it for Pac.

Perhaps, but we've seen sanctioning bodies pull some dodgy moves recently so perhaps in this instance the fighters can do without.

The belts don't mean **** anymore so I don't care. Since It's 145 not 147 it makes since the WW belt isn't on the line that being said the belts have been meaningless since they made more than one per weight class so at the end of the day I don't care surprised to see so many yes votes actually.

if it doesnt mean **** anymore, why not throw it in there along with the money...Make it a title fight? Oh yeah, because its at 145lbs. and cotto will be giving up everything.

Making this a non-title fight benefits ARUM alone. Whatever happens, Cotto keeps his belt, and his stocks high. Even ih he loses, He will be challenged and is assured of atleast 1 more title fight. Pac losing wont really pull him down too much, he will still be exciting and people will still watch. But if they put the title in, and Cotto loses, He would need to market himself a little harder to get another championship fight.
