Toney's cleaner, more effective punching would win him the fight, but it would be competitive all the way through, something like 8-4. Calzaghe's an unpredictable fighter with excellent speed, a good jab when he uses it, freaky activity level, nice work of angles, and proven adaptability. There's not a lot of guys who would totally dominate him, and I seriously doubt Toney, even at his best, is one of them.

Calzaghe's prime was at 168. Toney's Prime was at 160. He didn't look all that good at 168 which leads me to believe he would drop a decision to Calzaghe.

This is a bad stylistic match-up for Toney. He is stationary but employs that masterful shoulder roll of his. Still, this wouldn't work against Calzaghe and he would outwork Toney to a UD. Toney would make him look sloppy at times and possibly put him on the canvas. I used to say that Toney would win this fight but I've changed my opinion since Joe retired.

I think it's time to take a step back and really appreciate what Joe has done throughout his career.

Toney was best at suppermiddleweight. His best performance was against Barkley at 168.

I disagree. I think his first fight against Mike McCallum at middleweight was his best performance. That version of McCallum was a far superior fighter to that version of Barkley (or any version of Barkley). It should have been a win for Toney. He had the iron-chinned Bodysnatcher rocking at the end in a way not even Roy Jones managed against a far more declined version of McCallum. IMO the Barkley fight is like Mayweather-Gatti or Pacquiao-Diaz, in that of course the winner looked amazing, but it was against an overmatched opponent. But anyway, the main point is: Toney UD's Calzaghe all day long.

really? no gray area at all huh?

anyway, I think Calzaghe could possibly outwork Toney, I really do. even in his prime James Toney would sometimes go through several round long bouts of inexplicable inactivity. that would mean accumulating punishment and 100 plus punches per round coming from a prime calzaghe...and please believe, he would be hitting james, since we all know Joe came from all angles, which, coupled with his workrate is in my opinion what made him an all time great.

Toney had, in his prime, some of the greatest counter punching ability I've ever seen though, and if the Toney showed up who didn't lower his workrate significantly for rounds at a time, I think he might lose the first few rounds but eventually decision calzaghe, giving him a viscious counter uppercut and left hook beating in the process.

Do you think Joe Calzaghe hitting "quite hard" is going to be anything other than a fly-swat to one of the greatest chins in boxing history? Stopping Mario Veit is one thing, making James Toney respect your power is another thing entirely.

We have to go on peak performances. The Calzaghe performance against Lacy was one of the greatest performances of all times. Toney produced nothing near that level, therefore Calzaghe everytime.

Just what this forum needs - another moron who doesn't know a boxing glove from an oven glove. :patsch

Watch Jeff Lacy v Omar Sheika from before Jeff fought Joe. Jeff Lacy was never anything other than an overhyped, overmuscled, undertalented and very limited boxer.

James Toney did indeed turn in a similarly virtuoso performance against Iran Barkley, actually. He also knocked out a peak Michael Nunn, outfought Mike McCallum, outpointed Vassily Jirov to win the cruiserweight title, became only the second man to stop Evander Holyfield (Riddick Bowe was the first), and arguably beat a peak Sam Peter in their first fight.

You should maybe look into this sport before joining this website and passing comment on it :good
