Who wins this matchup, the textbook boxer-puncher or the uber-skilled pure boxer with a tendancy to cut?

i think it would be the same sad story for mcgowan ahead on points all be it very close, but the accurrate punches of lopez would of taken affect and the scott gets stopped on cuts around the 11th

McGowan is far bigger, i know we say that Lopez can fight at higher weights due to his frame, but i never saw him do it so i don't know. Now i've watched McGowan and it's not his style to impose his will in terms of strength, so Lopez could still win a boxing match.

McGowan on points for me, not a puncher but he can hit a much smaller man hard enough to really **** him off.

I'm gonna go for Walter as well. !5 round points decision, beautiful boxer. Proven strength being the decisive factor. Walter was good enough to hold his own with the best Bantams of his day let alone the best Flyweights and he didn't always get cut.

Lopez actually did pretty well against boxers, and had success tracking them down and slowing them down enough so that his attack could be accelerated in the later rounds. The fighters who tended to give Lopez more trouble were pressure fighters, and McGowan, while bigger, would be more inclined to box from the outside, I think.

Lots of close rounds, but I think Finito manages to secure enough of them to emerge with a VERY close decision.

    Good post.

I'm going to lurch for the cuts "get out" too though...a tendancy to cut IS a serious weakness against a really concise puncher. Lopez TKO11 McGowan. I have no problem with the other pick though.

Sweet Pea can you make a stipulation here please?

    NO KOP-OUTS.

Just a comment. From what I've seen of him. Walter, although fleet footed and a great boxer was pretty aggressive himself, could box beautifully on the inside and was very strong in the championship rounds.

First of all, McGowan wasn't much bigger at all. Lopez stood about 3 inches taller with a reach advantage, and a frame easily suited to add on weight (slight weight at that). McGowan could've probably been a Straw in today's game, or else Lopez a true Flyweight during McGowan's time. Size plays hardly a factor in this one unless it's in Lopez's favor due to his height and reach advantages. For that, I'll take Lopez's superior firepower to gain him the edge down the stretch, much in the way Drew and McGrain have pointed out. Would've been a hell of a technical affair.

Have we really got three tournaments going on at the same time?

I like Lopez here with a late rounds cuts stoppage. I agree with Pea that weight won't be much of an issue. Lopez a little too accurate not to do the damage needed to stop a McGowan that will be doing no worse than holding his own at the time of the stoppage.

    It's going to be overkill.

I can't believe you've just tried to swing the size factor in Lopez' favour. Even if all the dimensional and era based aspects which you just highlighted are true, what i have to go on is a very good bantamweight operator against a great strawweight/light-fly.
