I was watching it a few weeks ago and let me say that was a very good fight. Imo Lewis took Mavrovic way too lightly. Mavrovic man that guy could have been a great fighter but after his loss to Lewis, his life was very messed up in which it's very sad. But Mavrovic was a very good puncher. But like i said imo Lewis took Mavrovic way too lightly. I bet Lewis didn't know who Mavrovic was until he fought him. But still it was a very good fight in which Lewis won it clearly. I had Lewis winning by 3 rounds. This also shows just how underrated chin Lewis has cause he has fought bigger punchers in Rudduck, Tua, Briggs, Holyfield, Tyson, Morrison, Vitali, Mercer. Mavrovic and yet those fighters i mention Lewis didn't get ko. In the Mccall fight, Mccall was caught Lewis with a good shots but i honestly thought the Ref didn't give Lewis a chance to continue. Yes Lewis was wobbled but i thought Lewis could have continue. Lewis didn't really train at all for the Rahman first fight and it shows in that fight. Lewis was preparing to do a film on that time. In the rematch Lewis shows that when he's focused he can't be beat.
Mavrovic got his chin from wherever Vitali got his from, he was hampered by injuries so he called it a day, he is now a succesful businessman
Do you think Mavrovic would have been a great fighter if his career wasn't messed up with his personal life and injuries after losing to Lewis?
Lewis boxed VERY VERY stupid in that fight. He could have outboxed Mavrovich from the outside, I don't know what Lewis was thinking going into cliches with this guy all the time. Lewis looked like he lacked energy or motivation, or both. Also, that fight was only in front of what like 4000 spectators? Lewis was hated back then.
I agree Lewis fought very stupid in that fight. Like you said Lewis could easily beat Mavrovic if Lewis would use his boxing skills. Too me Lewis tool Mavrovic way too lightly. If i remember right, after this fight Lewis was going to fight Holyfield next in which i think Lewis think about Holyfield more then he did with Mavrovic.
It was inside a tent and absolutely roasting from the tv lights apparently. Both guys complained of feeling drained from the heat and even getting mild burns on the top of their heads. Mavrovic has done very well post-boxing, which is great to hear. The guy certainly had some chin on him. Someone put together a compilation video a year or two ago and he stood up to some hefty whacks, especially in the 7th and 11th. I didn't have it as close though, I thought Lewis won by about 8 points not 3. I've not heard of anyone having that close a card before.
We need to cut out the "Lewis took him lightly" bs. The plain fact was Lewis always had problems with equal sized guys who didn't go into their shells when hit.
It's not bs it's a clear cut fact. Mavrovic was a good fighter but his style is too 1 dimensional in which Lewis should have easily beat Mavrovic. Mavrovic is not better then Tua, Rudduck, Briggs in which Lewis easily beat Tua while Lewis tko both Rudduck and Briggs.
Lewis had to be carried into his dressing room, he was exhausted after that fight but by all accounts he had trained well except they had not taken the heat into consideration (referencing, read Mamas Boy and also Mission Impossible how lennox lewis unified the heavyweight division) As for Mavrovic, who was a lot smaller than lewis!!! He had a muscle eating disorder which stopped his career. He also looks a lot like Vinnie Jones. Lewis had predicted some months earlier he would knock him out in 7 rounds :hey
Wow, how many of you are Croatian? Was this a significant fight because Mavrovic did better than expected? How good of a fighter was Mavrovic? I watched him on TV all the time when I was a kid and all I remember is him knocking guys out every single time. I guess he was a brawler type, was he? If anybody has this fight or that compilation that someone mentioned I'd love to see it. I watched the fight when I was a kid but I don't remember anything from it, I was very young. What's the deal on this muscle eating disorder? I've not heard anything about that. Was he a serious contender or just a jorneyman? As people have said, he's a business man now and does commentary on broadcasts over in Croatia. He's a cool guy. Very easy going.
He was on the brink of becoming a real contender. He was undefeated and the European Champion going into the Lewis fight. He was tough as nails and had great fundamental skills. He would have been in and around the top 10 for years if it wasn't for his illness. Put it this way - he was easily better than Ruiz, Golota, McCline, Rahman, etc.. and look at how many title fights they got between them
