It seems that the only mark against the great Lopez was his competition (not his fault) but in terms of ability, where would you rank him ?

    Firstly, among Mexicans...
    Secondly, the world over.....
(Both in an all time p4p sense)

So you want an all time pound for pound ranking taking into account only pure ability? That's a pretty big ask!!!!

I won't get into all of that, but I will say that Lopez has come to define his style. I can't think of anyone who box-punches better than him really, purely in terms of execution. Of course, it's hard to be 100% sure about what lies beneath because, as you've pointed out, he didn't revel in competiton, but I do also think that he often made the copmpetiton look bad in a very Louis-like way - as far as straweights go, and that is his weight, there's nobody that can really expect to share a ring with him.

Which is also a factor. Has anyone ever been so superior to their peers?

Well, if his comp wasnt used against him & he still performed like he did, would he be for eg. the best Mexican ?... a top 10 p4per ?
Could he be the best Mexican regardless of his comp ?

I think it's reasonable to say that he could have been the best Mexican boxer in the terms you are describing. But he didn't prove that. So it's shaky ground.

As to whether or not he could be top 10 pound for pound regardless of competition, that's an enormous question. To answer it, a person would have to break down Robinson's entire skillset regardless of competition, Ike Williams's entire skillset regardless of competition etc etc.

He should be in the top 10 Mexicans if you are going to put more emphasis on ability.

All things averaged out..Id say he would be just in my alltime Mexican list these days and I dont think to much higher.
Really his comp wasnt very good..he didnt even really face the best available. Though he would have likely dealt with them.

He was a very skilled boxer, in fact I believe he was the first Mexican boxer to change the stereotypical style of brawling more to boxing. I think it had a lot to do with his trainer Nacho Beristain, but Ricardo had the skills to show others they could box and punch and not just go forward brawling. I would rate him in the top 5 Mexican fighters.

Lopez was a rare technical puncher. His power was off the charts in his weight class. Some of Lopez Ko's were Tysonesque. Pound for pound, he's a top 5 Mexican fighter in my book.

because you do not regard ala villamor as a great fighter in his time. For me, he is the greatest fighter never to be champion in the last 20 years

I agree with you that he was an astonishing puncher. Some of his highlight-reel KO's are in the very, very top class. He does have only guys like Tyson for company at his very best.

Technically he was maybe the best ever from an orthodox standpoint.

It IS difficult to find things he did improperly, and I think he is both the best composite ever with a "proper" style at his best weight, and a perfect technical puncher to boot. So he's really defining multiple punching issues. Incredible fighter.
