Calzaghe should get less credit nowadays for beating Lacy.. True or False?

Once again Vargas lost to Wright and was handed the win, Vargas could have very well lost to Quartey and was handed the win. What happened to Vargas was too much too fast and not so much tito, Keep in mind that Vargas fought 10 fights four of which were vs three of the eras very best fighters, most fighter wouldnt come though that undamaged. Throw in fights with Wright and Quartey over a 13 fight period and you get Vargas, a guy that is done before 30. Too much too fast.

 

Agreed. Sums it all up. Lacy was a very good up and coming fighter. Calzagher was a great fighter but most people didnt know it. After the fight, Lacy was half the fighter, and people finally woke up to how good calzaghe really was.

Calzaghe was not at all fancied before the fight, with 80-90% of fans and pundits alike picking Lacy for this, and put on an absolute masterclass, and one of the most one sided performances I've seen.

Lacy, for whatever reason, has never been the same fighter since. Whether that is to do with Calzaghe, injuries or simply being overhyped in the first place. Personally I think all 3 are factors in the decline of Lacy. Calzaghe took his confidence, injuries took his physical attributes, and his true ability was overhyped to begin with.

 

I'll give you Wright, I thought Wright won that, but in a close fight and not all that damaging. Fernando beat Ike clearly.

You dont take batterings like Lacy took and emerged unchanged. Was Jeff a great fighter, no, but he was a good one he had rolled over alot of the lower top 10 in the supermiddleweight division and Joe outclassed him badly. Thats a good win. Any way you slice it.

 

Calzaghes victory over Lacy should be viewed in the same way as Hopkins over Pavlik,

It takes talent to ruin another guy's career.

 

Lacy one of the biggest hype-jobs ever. He should been lost to Tsypko and draw with Mendoza and should been trashed many years ago, but his promoter saved his ass with home decisions and bull**** excuses about injury. And now this circus show with washed up RJJ...

 

Great fighters don't beaten like Lacy did. The fight is nowhere near as important as it was going in.

 

Calzaghe/Lacy can be veiwed in much the same way as Pavlik/Miranda. Lacy and Miranda both looked like monsters, and both had big reputations. Both looked like very high risk, dangerous opponents. Afterward both were reduced to a mere shadow of their former selves.

 

Here are the FACTS!!!

1. The supermiddle division was very poor in terms of Quality during Calzaghes 10 years.

2. Lacy was a SHOWTIME flagship fighter he had the looks etc and a manufactured punch.

3. They needed to create a changing of the gaurd scenario.

4. Lacy look **** poor vs Journeyman Omar Sheika....but followed up vs shot fighters Pemberton/Reid.

the Sheika fight should have told u he was average before Joe touched him.

 

Lacy only lost 2 decisions to Calzaghe and Taylor. He put Taylor on the floor in round 7. I think Lacy wou7ld destroy Carl Froch. He should have been in the super 6 tournament.

 

Has any fighter ever gotten hit that much and not get ko'd ?

Calzaghe should recieve less credit and he should also lose points for not being able to finish a guy at his mercy!

Calzaghe gave Jeff Lacy a 12 round beating and proved a lot of people wrong. I dont think it's unfair to say Lacy was severely mentally scarred after this fight.

About 90% of people were predicting Lacy to demolish Joe then all of a sudden Lacy was overhyped and one-dimensional. They certainly weren't saying that before Calzaghe took him apart.

A strong argument could be made that Calzaghe ruined Lacy that night and it's probably true. To this day I can't believe he wasn't pulled out or stopped after 7 rounds and it could well have made a difference to the way he is now.
