Middleweight Tournament First Pick Ketchell vs darcy

mcvey how can you go off film when we dont even have stanleys best performances? Its like judging evander holyfields entire style/talent level on the Vaughn Bean fight.

 

I said "the little film available",well, on that Ketchel looks clumsy ,wild and lacking in elementary defence.Johnson said he was astonished how easy Ketchel was to hit ,and they were VERY close friends .The Johnson fight may NOT have been Ketchels best performance ,but how many fights did he have after it? He was not going to improve his skills was he?
The Papke clips show a fast dangerous fighter ,but he does not look as polished as Darcy imo.
Ps. How do you know which were Ketchel's best performances if they werent filmed?

 

Well Almost 100% of Newspapers/Expert opinions/Historians/everything I HAVE EVER READ suggests the 4th Ketchel-Papke fight was by far the worst most laxidasical fight of there series.

Clumsy? NO. Ketchel was an athlete. His aggresion sometimes made him appear clumsly, but he knew how to land sunday punches on master boxers.

Wild? Yes but he used it to his advantage as one of the best offensive fighters of all time

Elementery Defense? Certainly not anymore than Bob Fitzsimmons with his hands low at his waist, his feet close together, and chin sticking out. That to me is elementery defense. Ketchel actually leaned back keeping his right close to his cheek in a max schmeling type stance..far better than some of the old timers I have seen fight



ps Jack Johnson shouldn't talk about Ketchel. Ketchel put Johnson on his ass, Buzzed him good. Only 170lb too. How many middleweight champions in history have put him a heavyweight champ on there ass with a face blow?

 

From what I have seen, Ketchel looks wild and open ,when he misses a punch he is off balance , he has no defence to speak of, Johnson played with him ,he staggered him twice and quickly moved in and grabbed him to keep him upright."Whoa there Stanley where you going"
Johnson jabbed him at will,I saw no head movement ,no feints just a crash, bash, let it all hang out attack.Ketchel was bleeding from the nose and mouth after the first round.
That night, after the fight Ketchel won $700 from Johnson at poker, they were friends,if you watch that fight and dont think Johnson is on the cuffs ,well, I dont know what to say to you.
I think Johnson is far better qualified to talk about Ketchels abilities than any else I can think of ,as Maurice Thompson ,as far as I know ,never commented on them.
O Brien said "you can jab his puss off". Unfortunately for OBrien ,he lacked the power to keep such a thunderous puncher off him for an entire fight.
If Ketchel was an athlete ,he was a pretty strange one , he was a very hard drinker and smoker ,a regular opium taker, and would **** a frog. He also was probably bipolar, and had a Mother fixation,according to several of the whores he entertained.The guy was a one in a million puncher and carried his power all through a fight, but a defensive wizz he was NOT.
I voted for him over Darcy ,so give me a break!

 

I pick Ketchel based on the fact that we never say the best of Darcy.
