Also, I am planning to 'plan' it for a week (a rather clever device in order to let the pleminaries take place on here, of which the board is being battered with at the moment) and is there any objection if I do it post-war only (therefore emitting popular choices such as Gene Tunney, Sam Langford, Carpentier, etc etc etc) as I think there is already a huge amount of 'post-war' LHW's to choose from and, I myself usually discuss only that era onwards. Or does that make me a bad choice to moderate one of these tourneys??? Anyways, suggestions for fighters are of course appreciated, the first ones I can think off the top of my head are; Joey Maxim Harold Johnson Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Willie Pastrano Jose Torres Dick Tiger Galindez John Conteh Matthew Saad Muhammad Dwight Qawi Eddie Mustafa Muhammad Bob Foster Mike Spinks Virgil Hill Roy Jones Bernard Hopkins Michael Moorer I'm sure I've missed some out. There are others I'm thinking of including such as Parlov and Marvin Johnson, do they deserve to be in there?What about Tommy Hearns, Yaqui Lopez,Dariusz Michalczewski, Any other NOTABLE OMISSIONS????? Or just guys that would be useful additions due to their H2H ability. As I say, any objections, suggestions; let me know. I assume we are just 'picking out of the hat'??? I'm sure I've missed loads. As I say, I think it MAY have already been done. Can't find it through the couple of pages I have scanned through. Don't think Glen Johnson is quite on the level of some of these guys to be honest, tough S.O.B that he is.
Why not put in Calzaghe, yes he only had 2 fights officially but 168lbs was LHW in the old days and same day weigh ins would probably mean he'd fight at 175 instead of 168 anyway. Toney never performed at his best at the weight but I like to question 'what if Toney was at his very best at 175' Hard to do a tourny without Tunney/Conn imo and their skill sets sit well with modern fighters. Against the very elite LHWs of all time I think Greb comes up short, metaphorically and literally plus we've never seen him fight which I dont like in mythical match ups. Any reason for not including Bivins and Marshall? How many fighters do you want to have in it?
Nah. I'll put Hopkins in for his clear cut win over Tarver and obvious brilliance but I can't see Calzaghe making much of a splash in this tournament i.e what it is supposed to achieve which is debate. What kind of debate would Calzaghe vs Conteh/Qawi/Saad/Spinks/Foster/Moore provide? Because I for one can't see him beating any of those guys. At least you contributed, but can anyone actually remember whether anyone else has already started doing the LHW's?????
If you get stuck for names, You right about his abilities, But Glen is above average. Also Mike Quarry for Consideration. Virgil Hill? Thomas Hearns. This is going to be an exciting Tourney!
As I have said many times before I don't think Tunney's skills are advanced enough to compete against any of these guys. Like Dempsey (and probably Benny Leonard) an absolute pioneer; but I feel it advanced very fast up until Ray Robinson onwards. Only my opinion, as I say enough people like you and I will HAVE to include them. I used to say the same, I used to be very harsh on his low guard for 1 thing. But have gone back on it the more i've seen of him, he is a boxing master in many ways, wonderful movement and use of distance, very fast hands, amazing countering skills, sets traps and makes his opponent pay, great jab, good power. I'd recommend you see more of him if you haven't, he looks better against smaller opponents than he does against Dempsey.
Regardless, I feel that style, whilst REVOLUTIONARY, has been taken much further by LESSER ACCOMPLISHED FIGHTERS. I've been scorned in the past, but whilst clearly seeing what a debt we owe to these guys, those guys in todays game would be super tough club fighters. Obviously loads of people disagree with me, I've stated my reasons before.
