I cant help but think of how EASILY Roy Jones Junior took Toney apart and made him look like a C level fighter... but that's Roy and he did that to everyone. Calzaghe aint no Roy Jones, BUT, he is fast, using angles and is very unorthodox, but more importantly never lost or really looked close to it as every oponent he struggled with he adapted to.

Really Calzaghe would just have to keep up a good workrate and just box off the jab and control the distance. Toney was too slow of foot and likes to sit in the pocket too much and would be losing rounds on activity if nothing else. Toney is an ATG, but he's been beaten and there are already blueprints available, but how do you beat Calzaghe? If you can out brawl him then he simply outboxes you and outworks you... if you out box him he'll outbrawl you and still outwork you. Sorry, Calzaghe is too fast and certainly too smart to to not adjust to a guy who has NEVER changed the way he fights apart from slow down due to weight and dedication issues, which again, like it or not is who James Toney is.

1 sided UD in favour of Calzaghe, Toney at best might win 4 rounds with a successful counter right, but that punch gets taken away from him at some stage and rendered useless, just as Hops was.

(I'm a white American by the way, hope this doesn't mess with the demographic pics too much )

How the hell did Joe C get this many votes from supposedly knowledgeable boxing fans? He's nowhere near prime Toney's talent level. He gets pimpslapped in this fight.

Votes on this site are more born out of fanatical hate based on geographic location and little boys and girls with too much of an agenda and warped sense of patriotism. I justified my post and think Toney is a lock ATG 1st ballot HOF'er, but head to head he loses this one, he got absolutely dismantled by RJJ, and in my humble opinion it simply boils down to one thing. Toney cant deal well with fighters that move, unless of course he gets that fight changing punch, but I dont think he can enough pop to do anything more serious than a flash KD.

I think you're wrong on this one. Hopkins had a good style for Calzaghe fair enough. But the most important thing is that Calzaghe had the perfect style for an old fighter with poor stamina.

You said yourself in an earlier post that Calzaghe substitutes throwing flurries of meaningless small shots for doing feints. With that volume of punches coming at old fighters, they cant handle it.

Hopkins was able to handle Pavlik afterwards because Pavlik was throwing big straights, which Hopkins could use his movement and defense to get around. Different style, didn't make use of Hopkins being old and poor stamina.

He was "aged" and Calzaghe had the perfect style to overwhelm him. Therefore I give Calzaghe very little credit for the Hopkins fight, as i believe it would have been a completely different fight a few years earlier. Therefore i dont think how Calzaghe handled Hopkins can be used in arguing that he would have handled a 168 Toney.

As was stated by somebody else already Toney had a great resume at 160-168. Seems pretty biased to make this statement. Like your discrediting other SMW to make it seem like Joe was the only person to do anything at this weight.

If we're getting into resumes in this discussion, Toney fought great fighters. Took on the best, beat some greats, and only lost to Jones in this part of his career. He then went onto have success and win titles at higher weights despite obviously becoming lazy in his training.

I don't think Calzaghe's body of work is even close.

It's well known that Toney was dead at the weight, comparable to Pac v DLH.

No it isn't. Here's one comparison, they were both so drained that they had to be rehydrated on an IV drip. Next time you laugh at someone, make sure you know what you're talking about
