I can completely understand Lewis for not coming back though. The man deserves no disrespect for not wanting to fight Vitali again. Lewis had nothing to gain other than another paycheck, it was a lose lose proposition for him. If he KOd Vitali in a rematch then Vitali would just have been another bum. If Vitali won, Lewis was the bum. Very simple. Lewis must have earned anywhere between US $50-100m before the Vitali fight in his entire career. Why put his legacy on the line for another $20m. The money wouldn't make much of a difference to his lifestyle. One thing though: I remember Lewis blocking the WBC title for many months. He could have made up his mind rather quickly after winning against Vitali and vacating the belt, instead of dragging things on and on and on and then FINALLY vacating right before he was stripped.
Lewis looked well out of shape when they fought. If he got his arse in gear for the rematch you'd be looking at a R4 KO.

Lewis was in very good shape for Vitali, I know this for a fact, he was not taking Johnson lightly. The mental and phsyical pressure Vitali put on Lewis brought on the early fatigue, Lewis had never faced such extreme physical pressure as Vitali put on him. This fight was as good if not more exciting than Manila or Zaire, it's too bad the fight didn't reach a conclusive ending. And it's too bad the rematch never happened. It was a big disappointment for the sport to not see this rematch. This left a lot of confusion.
Wow. This forum needs a shot in the ass to cure the Klit nut-huggery disease. A fat, out-of-shape, un-motivated, un-inspired Lennox Lewis was able to land damn near every punch he threw flush on the older Klit - especially the hook and upper-cut. The Klit showed an utter LACK of defense in that fight. The only reason the fight lasted as long as it did is because Lewis was fat, out-of-shape, un-motivated, and un-inspired. A properly conditioned, in shape, motivated, and inspired Lennox Lewis takes out the trash and disposes of the older Klit in Michael Grant like fashion...
1 - Mercer put him under as much pressure. 2 - It's a fact is it mate? Provide evidence. Lewis was a little tired yes but have you guys ever watched other Lewis fights?After a few rounds he ALWAYS dropped his hands and breathed through his mouth. I'd like to also point out that for a guy who was supposidly '****ed' he didn't take a backward step the whole fight!!
Oh please At least try and be impartial. Lewis was heavier than he'd ever been and was noticeably rusty. And he still won. As for pessure, well you obviously haven't seen his fight with Mercer among others. You really should be embarrassed by that post. Not one correct or sensible point made.
Lewis promised a re match in the ring after the fight,then made demands after to vitali ,"get eye checked by dr. "etc. etc......never gave promised rematch, retired .......vitali goes on to win belt.......retires for 4 years comes back and humiliates "whoiznex" Peter ......vitali would win rematch , lewis feared this and chose to retire.....no shame in that ....it is merely the facts.but I really wish a lennox-vitali-wlad-lennox.....tournament would have happened! Would have been great for boxing!!
