Personally, I never score a fight on first viewing. I prefer to just soak up the atmosphere and not have to think with the logical part of my brain. But its weird, because often I see a fight very different when I re-watch and score on a second viewing. Tarver-Jones 1 is a good example of this, after 1st viewing I was CONVINCED Tarver was robbed, on a 2nd viewing and scoring, I scored it a draw, but felt Jones was the one who deserved the desicion more. So what about you guys, do you score the fight on first viewing, or is it something you do later?
Takes away the fun. I only do it for close fights, trying to settle controversies, at least for myself. It would be a waste of time to try and score Hopkins/Pavlik or Pac/Hoya, but Marquez/Pac 2 is something worth the effort.
I'm the same way. On my first watch I only want to enjoy the action. I have a feel for who I think is winning but I'm not keeping score. When I go back and look at it round by round sometimes I realize that the guy that I thought won actually didn't or that what I thought was a robbery was a close fight that could have gone either way or that the fight wasn't as close as I thought. Take Marquez vs Barrera for instance. The first time I saw it I thought Marquez won but I was outraged at the wide margin in the scores. After actually scoring it I realized that while a lot of the rounds were close, Marquez was winning them. A lot of close rounds makes for a close fight but can still make for a lopsided score if the same guy is edging them.
Sometimes its the only fun to be had. Hopkins-Cazaghe is always fun to score, because it really makes you question what kind of style you value more, the busy fighter, or the guy with the cleaner shots.
i try not to but i end up doing it anyways until about the 10th then i try to remember how i scored it...but i hate doing that cuz i want to enjoy a fight i payed money for
the most i'll do is call out who i think won a round if my friends are around during a fight. other than that? nah it'll ruin the whole experience for me. I plan on going into boxing journalism but at the moment Im STRICTLY A FAN
True, the debate between busy vs cleaner/harder shots is always worth the effort. These tend to be very controversial because then it becomes subjective. Leonard/ Hagler, Whitaker/Hoya. This is a whole thread in itself.
I keep a scorecard only if I think a fight will be close and go to the cards. If it's a fight that I think will end in a KO< or if its a mismatch fight, I never really bother keeping an actual card.
its normal thou. have you ever realised that when your watching a friday night fight between two random guys you instinctively want one of them to win? well just like that you instinctively start looking at there performances and have a pretty good idea of who won and by how much. your brain calculates it becuz your a boxing fan lol
When I watch a fight with my friends they usually want to score the fight . But most times I dont score fights unless I think the wrong guy won. Alot of times its clear who the winner is without scoring.
