Hopefully this one hasn't been posted before - too lazy to read all the other posts.

    DURAN loses $100,000 - literally!

In 1989, just after he beat Iran Barkley, Roberto Duran fell into some money ($1.6Mil) via a tax refund of some sort. He and his wife, notorious for blowing millions in the past, quickly blew most of this lot as well. They then decided to take the $800,000 that remained back home to Panama with them.

Story goes that they packaged the $800,000 into 8 x $100,000 lots, all in seperate carry bags. There were only 7 of team Duran travelling, so after each took a carry-on bag there was still one left that had to travel in the aircraft's main luggage compartment.

Low and behold, when they reached Panama the 8th bag containing $100,000 had gone missing - fancy that! - and it's a true story according to the book 'Four Kings' by George Gimall.

Footnote to that: Apparently, even though Duran earnt squillions during his career, he and his wife just blew it, time and again. His wife was apparently a shocking gambler!

Renee Arredondo showed up drunk to fight Carlos Palomino in 1997. His trainer for that fight is a friend of my family. He was ko'd in the first round.

Frank Sinatra bankrolled the Jersey Joe Walcott /Joey Maxim fight and lost $50,000 on it. His one and only attempt as a boxing promoter.

Glad you mentioned that.. his record is very subjective, although announcement blemishes may have occured. Rubin Olivares is another with purported record enhancements.....

I brought this question up a couple of years ago..John Thomas was the only one to supply an answer..apparently he had an early loss in his first few fights, that his management had been in litigation to get expunged from his record..and having the mexican boxing panel in their pocket were ultimately successful. Don't personally know the details of the suspect loss or lack thereof.

Wouldn't removing a tape worm have a more positive effect on you instead of negative?:huh

Supposedly, it is what allowed him to make weight so easily.
Once the tapeworm was removed, he was no longer able to make weight...

There was a write up about it years ago.

Thanks for this one, McVey. I know a lot about Frank, but did not know this. He was a big fight fan, most everyone knows, his father was a fighter and Frank spent a lot of hours working out at Stillman's in between his landmark singing engagements at the Paramount, under the tutelage of Al Sylvestri. Frank befriended a lot of fighters, was tight with Billy Conn and in some of his films, guys like Robinson and Beau Jack and Rocky Graziano got cameos. And his generosities to guys like Robinson and Louis and God only knows to how many others are now known.

Chalky Wright who is of Afro origin was born in Mexico. Thus a black man is the first Mexican born fighter to win a title.

Luis Resto stated that in addition to having the padding removed from his gloves Panama Lewis put plaster on his gloves and put antihistamines in his water. It was on the HBO special on the the incident.
