Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach told the Manilla Bulletin that Manny doesn't need a fight with Cotto if the title is not on the line. He says the WBO should force Cotto to defend the title. The sanctioning body is trying but Cotto has already said that he plans to vacate the title if the WBO tries to force his hand. "The WBO should make it a title fight. Message to Roach - if you really want Pac to have 7 world titles then stop being a ***** & let Cotto come in at 147, just like you did Oscar.

This guy Roach doesnt realise that he himself is giving Pac haters ever ounce of ammunition they need with this bull****.

Not at all. As long as it's over 140 and no more than 147 the belt can be (and should be) up. If the fight was at 139 or 148, fine no belt. There are many fights in which catch weights are used within a division and the title is still at stake. This is Cotto being petty.

I can see the the WBO viewing the situation like this:

Cotto is WBO welterweight champion.

The fight will be a welterweight fight.

Nobody is forcing Cotto to come a few pounds under the WW limit. Certainly not us, the WBO.

A WW fight is a fight where two fighters weigh ANYWHERE between 141-147. If they both weigh in at 145, it's a WW fight.

There's numerous precedents of catchweight fights being title fights.

If our WW champ doesn't defend his WW belt in a WW fight, it devalues our belt.

141-147 is welterweight. doesnt mean it has to be 147 exactly. Now fighters have the prerrogative to negotiate about setting an ideal weight where both parties compromise to accommodate the difference in weight. Now, why in the world would you even consider fighting in a catchweight when you wont throw in the belt for the reason that you cant go 147? What was the negotiations for then?!?!

Absolutley,If Manny wants the WBO title,go up to 147,not 145 and if WBO forces Miguel to defend it,Cotto would vacate it good,either way Manny doesnt get what he want!!!

This whole thing is a mess. I see both peoples sides of the argument....both sides make valid points (however I side with the "Manny should just fight at 147 if he wants the title"). Alls I will say is this.......Manny is a complete drama queen! (along with his team). There alwaaaaays seems to be some sort of drama when it comes to him:

Cotto Catchweight Fiasco.
The DLH fight on again/ off again dispute over the split.
Manny unexpectedly deciding to train in the Philliphines for his fight against Oscar Larios.

I'm drawing a blank here on other times but I know there has been more! Thank God this guy backs up his **** in the ring!

Cotto has the WBO welterweight title. A welterweight fight is between 141-147 pounds. You're suggesting that both fighters MUST weigh in at 147 for it to be a title fight - which is blatantly incorrect.

147 is the LIMIT, it is not necessity for a title fight to take place on the very edge of the limit. Hopkins-DLH is a good example of this, and I'm sure more knowledgable posters can give you many more.

But this is an unsual scenario, Cotto isn't being ALLOWED to fight at 147, so he feels that given this fact he shouldn't have to put his belt up for grabs, which is fair enough from his perspective. He's being cautious, and playing it safe. However, it's a pretty tenuous position to maintain, IMO. "The title shouldn't be on the line because I signed a contract to fight at 145".

Personally, as a big Cotto fan, I'd rather just see him man-up and put the title on the line. But then again, I'd also like to see Pacquaio let Cotto come in at 147.
