No. The comparison, stylistically, should be made between V. Ortiz & Vargas. V. Ortiz screamed southpaw Vargas to me after I saw a few of his fights. Same, physically imposing punching! --- k, seen the poll now (wasn't there when I first hit reply!) in terms of potential, though, perhaps there is a comparison to be made. Cotto will never be as great as he could have been (he showed hints of how good he could be vs. Mosley! even...matching him for speed at times). And let's be honest, since coming up to 147... Cotto had improved a lot compared to the flat-footed days at 140. He truly is not the same as he was pre-Margarito... JUDGING BY WHAT WE'VE SEEN SINCE! Seems like he has reverted to the flat-footed puncher. ;-( similarly, Vargas never reached his potential. But that's about as far as it goes. I suppose DLH-Vargas can be compared to Pacquiao-Cotto. one of the p4p stars of the moment stepping up to face a big bad, physically imposing champ of the division above.
im not talking stylistically.... im talking about the way they came up hype wise.. how they lost.... rebounded... etc etc just their career paths
Vargas on a whole different level than Cotto ... fought more competition, won a title at the age of 20 yrs ... fought 4 - maybe 5 hall of famers ... won 2 major titles ... and his career was cut shot because of back problems not because of a beat down. He wasn't mentally damaged but physically ... he got slower ... and gained more weight ... it effected his ability to effectively train. Ike Quartey Winky Wright Shane Mosley Ricardo Mayorga Oscar De La Hoya Tito Trinidad Ramone Campos Javier Castillejo
Vargas would've been Cotto if he was paced properly. He wasn't though. Miguel Cotto is Vargas on a Top Rank blueprint. If Cotto had to take the sort of schedule that Vargas had, he would've wound up like Bojado.
Vargas was a beast. They were throwin in him with vets at a very young age. Cotto just recently started stepping it up. No comparison.
I think Vargas was rushed more than Cotto and may have had more success if he had had a few more fights before Trinidad. Vargas was a great boxer, as is Cotto, but he seemed to not want to use it unless he was hurt and was forced to. Cotto is a much smarter and more tactical fighter and I think will go on to have a more successful career overall. As for who they've fought, Cotto's list is pretty impressive, if not as much as Vargas YET. Good comparison on some levels, bad on others.
Vargas was the product of bad handling by his promoter/team, I would have never fed Vargas to Trinidad He was not ready and was never the same after that bout. While Cotto was beat up by Margo mentally Cotto is ok Because he thinks that Margo cheated in order to beat him like he did. Vargas's never had that luxury Tito beat his ass plain and simple and ruined him mentally aside from his back problems His Ego was smashed into pieces that night hard to come back 100% from that kind of beating.
Vargas also had poor discipline another reason his chin started to become suspect. Vargas was rushed a bit, but he was on the same track as his stable mates, Zab Judah, Andrew Golota, and David Tua. The only one who went slowly was Vernon Forrest, and I could never understand that because Vernon used to abuse him in the gym. Cotto is a better fighter overall. I would say Cotto had one of the toughest runs to the title. His record consists of a very strong list of tough fighters offering a nice array of different styles. Cotto in my opinion is one of the most underated fighters for his accomplishments so far.
Bull**** his career started to go downhill for two different reasons, the first being the beat downs he has took and rushing into big fights when he should have taken his time and the 2nd reason is due to the weight he would gain inbetween fights, that does more harm to you than most think. Lets not also forget Nando was also caught using Roids when he was knocked out By DLH, sure he beat Campos and Winky and Quartey but most feel Winky beat him, Campos isnt nothing to brag about neither is Castillejo. Cotto did beat Mosley of which Mosley has 2 TKOs against Vargas and has recently rebounded with a big upset over Margarito. Sorry But IMO Cotto and Vargas just cant be compaired, the only claim Vargas has is his win over Quartey his win over Winky is questionable.
I would have to agree with this. I watched Vargas box beautifully in the gym many times, when he came out of the olympics. He was never as good as Vernon Forrest, but he never boxed smart in the big fights.
so unfulfilled potential is largely where the comparison ends, amirite, y'all? wouldn't you say? who had more potential is questionable. I'd lean towards Vargas.. but Cotto had some great potential and was making huge strides pre-Margarito. How he does in the re-match will go a long way to answering the big questions. Roach should be in Margarito's corner for that, also... if he IS going to train him like he said so in that interview on fighthype a while back. (said tony was crying infront of him, saying he didnt know **** about the dodgy wraps!!)
