Would Toney vs Hearns have the same pattern and result as Toney vs Nunn?

At middleweight.

Now it goes without saying that Nunn and Hearns are two different fighters, and a Toney vs Hearns fight would be different. This much is obvious.

However, would the general pattern of the fight and the eventual result be the same?

Would Hearns outbox Toney over the first few rounds, then Toney begin to come more into it in the mid-late rounds and start to get closer, and then Toney win by stoppage?

Or would this fight have a totally different flow to it and/or result? Would Hearns UD Toney or could Toney get the job done in a couple of rounds?

Possibly more than probably.

If Hearns fights smart, boxes from distance using his speed, jab & footwork aiming to build pts & doesnt go for the kill at every opportunity then I see him outpointing Toney to a UD.... if he continually rushes in on Toney, I can see Toney getting off with the more accurate & damaging punches that will eventually wear Hearns down later on in the fight for a possible TKO, probably around rd 11 or so.

IMO its Hearns fight to lose (as just about every fight wa due to his unnatural physique & phenomenal offensive boxing ability) & if he boxes from the outside, he takes home a UD despite having some rocky moments mid-late on.

 

Toney is knocking Hearns out at some point, Nunn is also a better middleweight than Hearns, hence him handling the likes of Barkley, and ofcourse Nunn is rangier. So I see Toney having far less problem with Hearns than he would have Nunn, it'd be easier to get inside or to mid range and time some big shots that Hearns just won't be able to take, Toney will be too accurate and too powerful here

The catch is that Toney was not some huge puncher ... the shot that caught Nunn was a once in a career shot by Toney ... Nunn was the better middleweight but Hearns was faster and much harder punching .. I don't know ...

Toney would have beaten Hearns at middleweight. He's good outside ability to match up with Hearns, although not quite as a pure boxer. Inside, thats where he really does the damage.

 

Toney was not Julian Jackson, but he was a strong puncher at middleweight. Toney's harder shots were the difference in his fights with McCallum.

Hearns is a bad match for Toney stylistically, but Toney's ability to counter with a big shot keeps him in the fight. I'm leaning towards Hearns by decision.

 

Toney was all about counterpunching. He was never a hunter and he struggled with Nunn for that reason until he got lucky with the big left hook. I think a pre-Hagler Hearns would win a lopsided decision with the later rounds interesting. Wouldn't rule out a KO though.

 

Nunn couldnt crack an egg though. Toney could get a lot closer to him than he would be able to against Thomas Hearns. Your not going to beat Toney on the inside. Hearns would have to box smart and crack Toney every once in a while to maintain his distance.

 

I think logic might state that Toney certainly has an excellent chance. Hearns had great power, but Toney's chin has been well tested, and to this day he has yet to be stopped. Hearns might box as well as Nunn, who in truth was leading Toney through 11 rounds, but I don't know how long Tommy could go without getting tagged. James was a tricky fighter. He had good defense, and could adapt to his opponent's style to really make for a long night. I don't what happens to be honest. But, my answer is that Toney is well capable of pulling it off if Tommy doesn't bring his "A" game.

 

I think Toney had more than enough Juice to beat Hearns.He was a natural middleweight, and well-rounded enough to handle Tommy in a close, but competitive fight.

I hate to talk about Hearns vs. Toney because they are good friends. I seem to recall hearing that Toney as a young man like teenager age went to Hearns house and Hearns inspired him to work hard and he will be champion. But for talk I think had they fought in 1991, I think Hearns outboxes him since Herans had a more offensive nature than Nunn. They never really were prime or near fighting each other. By the time Toney was champ at 160, Hearns was at 175.
