It proves that the general public couldn't give a ******'s wank about boxing unless it's well publicised and interest built up into a big event. Which this fight has not been....
I would also say that tonight proves what a poor promoter hennessy is. I enjoy his itv4 shows no doubt, but when you've got two british fighters in World title fights in the States (Froch defending, Witter challenging) and neither of them are shown live on UK TV, the buck stops with you. If the TV companies don't appear to be interested, you gotta offer it to them at a knock down rate and build their profiles that way. From what I've read, it appears he was asking too much for Froch v Taylor and doesn't seem to have bothered finding TV coverage for Witter tonight. A big shame. I know we all love an often deserved dig at Warren, but could you imagine one of his fighters getting a world title shot and it not being on UK TV? Despite that, the best of luck to Junior. I'm working early tomorrow so I'll be tucked up in bed while the fights on and hopefully I'll be able to download and watch it tomorrow without finding out the results.
Kind of agree with you Finchy, but when was the last time that Warren had a fighter travel overseas for a world title fight?
When Jennings fought Cotto earlier this year. If not for Setanta I doubt that fight would've been televised either.
Your correct froch can't draw flies either makes so much sense now. Nothing to do with a lot of the country not taking an interest in boxing
If it wasn't for the Setanta Arum contract im 100% sure jennings & Gary Lockett wouldn't have been on
Recently, just off the top of my head I can think of Jennings, Lockett and Skelton. Not 100% about Lockett, but Jennings and Skelton were definitely on Setanta, albeit late deals. Although at the time Lockett and Skelton fought, Warren, or "Sports Network" had a deal with Setanta. Obviously those fights would have been extras, but the point is that Warren got them on TV in this country. Nobody will know for sure if Setanta would have showed Witter tonight had they still been around. Maybe Hennessy would have learnt his lesson from Froch and put the price down so they could afford it? Maybe he would have priced them out of it? We'll never know. Setanta or no Setanta, Hennessy should have ensured this, and the last Froch fight were shown in this country.
Why doesn't Hennessy sell the rights to SOMEONE, ANYONE in the UK? Forget how much you get...just ****ing sell the thing. You aren't getting anything if you fail to sell it, and it certainly doesn't help your products sell on value.
I totally forgot about those fights - mainly because they were in 2 cases utterly one-sided and the other involved a British heavyweight. If it hadn't been for Setanta they would definitely not have been on British TV. To take your point I don't know if Warren would have done these fights without TV being on board, but Jennings and Lockett had zero chance of winning those fights and I'm sure they would still have taken their chances eben without TV. I'm with you on the Froch fight, that should have been live on ITV, but can quite understand why no-one would want Witter live with finances as they are. That it's not on delay is pretty bloody awful though. Maybe it will turn up on ITV over the next couple days.
What Tonight Proves is that Junior Witter is prepared to go to U.S and try and regain his WBC title. Junior fights anyone anywhere and is a proper professional. He just wants to win fights and be a proper fighter.
