I don't have an axe to grind here. I'd pick Marcianio out of many to go see fight. Frazier fought just about the same people Ali did. He destroyed Bonevena much quicker than it took Ali.

I recognize Marciano as the best of his era. Patterson is lucky he retired when he did.

I had not heard before, and just read here today, that Marciano retired on account of the rise of Liston. Is there any truth to that? I have a hard time believing that.

 

WHAT? Bonavena floored Frazier twice in one round while almost dropping him a third time to win the fight. Bonavena went 27 rounds with Frazier in two contested battles. Ali Knocked Bonavena out in the 15th round, while looking shaky in some spots but clearly not having the timing due to being off. How can you make such a statement like that? And the Frazier fought everyone Ali fought is not only inaccurate but a blanket statement to get you off specifics. Frazier didn't fight Patterson, Liston, Norton, Shavers, Lyle, etc.

No, zero truth to it. Liston had barely over a dozen fights around the last Marciano fight. Liston wasn't even on the radar scene till the late 50's (57-58).

 

My memory may be shaky. It seems to me I saw Frazier take Bonevena down early. I'll have to look up the stats, but i have in my mind a creepy apartment on Clark street and watching Frazier destroy Bonevena early.

There's no need to get egotistical here. We remember things inaccurately sometimes, I surely do. I have no stake in promoting an inaccuracy.

You were right. I had a 17 year old, later to become my wife, on my mind that day. I didn't see the whole fight.

It's okay. We all forgot things from time to time. The statement just jumped at me since most comment on how Ali did away better than Bonavena did. Well that's what's all about. It's good fight but that would be far more important. Sorry for coming across overly aggressive.

As it is, though. I think Marciano's resume isn't better than most give credit for because people tend to lean on the age of some of his opposition. I was making a point with Frazier because I believe there resume's to be quite comparable if you take Ali of his list. I actually prefer his resume once you take Ali off that list. We don't know what Marciano could've done, especially with a FOTC Ali. However, his resume stacks up fairly good against a lot of legends. Against Ali's, not so good. But just about everyone's resume looks bad against Ali.

 

Ali is my heavyweight favorite, but Basilio is perhaps my all time favorite. Have you read 'The Onion Picker'?

 

No but I hear terrific things about it. I tend to pick it up very soon. Ali is one of my favorite fighters (Second favorite to Marciano just there with Frazier). Basilio is one of my all time favorite fighters also. One tough SOB. I have the Ringside Rivalry DVD which he appears on with Dundee. Seems like a terrific guy. Incredibly hard working fighter.

I had the idea that he looked into the mirror one morning and decided that the sausage business was for him. I'm sure I am wrong. But his face shows what his trade was.

 

Marciano only beat old fighters so why compare them to people Ali fought or people Foreman or Holyfield or Frazier or Bowe fought? Imagine if Foreman only fought fighters when they were pushing 40 and were naturally smaller than himself. Imagine if all great heavyweigths did that. Most would go undefeated.
