First of all lets look at his champion reign...he holds the record for most defenses at SMW when it was weak as hell.. Beats an OLD and PAST PRIME Chirs Eubank for the title. Defends it against Mijar Masqdlsdadsld or Mario Veit or whatever other scrubs he fought oh yeah and Omar Sheika too. His first big fight since the Eubank fight he fights an OVERRATED, one dimensional, no defense having Jeff Lacy who is pretty good but nothing close to elite....then he fights Manfredo and beats him with a barrage of slaps... Then he fights Kessler..I'll give him credit for this...his BEST win..over a solid champion. Then he fights a 43 year old Hopkins and LOSSES..I don't care what anyone says..Calzaghe didn't do **** in that fight and looked like a total bitchass with his missed slaps.....Hopkins was landing right hands and counter left hooks at least. Calzaghe best round was round 9...did he even win a round CLEARLY besides that? It seems like all other rounds you could give Calslappy are close rounds that couldve gone either way. I honestly can't remember..all I can remmeber is Hopkins dropping him on his ass....almost doing it again in round 7..and getting robbed by split decision. Then he fights the shell of Roy Jones Jr...gets dropped :yep AGAIN....gets hit alot in that fight by clean punches..he wasn't even more impressive than Glen Johnson and Tarver were..they hurt, dominated, and KO'd Jones...years before Calzaghe beat him.... I have no doubt in my mind that if Jones and Hopkins were young, they'd both destroy Calslappy. Hopkins already beat him at age 43.... Then he retires with his protected undefeated record and hides in Whales...well I say good riddance Calslappy
joe galzaghe is a good fighter without a doubt, i dont think he is overrated. i do agree however, that if he fights the top guys prime for prime, he loses.
First of all there is no way Joe calzaghe is overrated fighter never mind the most overrated fighter the stats talk for themself.I dont see why some members on this site continue to have a go at Joe.He has never took the easy fights always tried to test himself against the best. The only thing you can say is maybe spent to long before going to America
Eubank was still good enough after losing to Joe, to jump two weight classesand look better against Thompson than David Haye. Hopkins was still good enough to school Pavlik and it was a win by Calzaghe, he simply outworked Hopkins. Some fighters build a legacy with wins over ATG's, like Frazier. Some build a legacy with incredible consistency, like Holmes or Joe Calzaghe. To never have an off - night in over a decade, to never lose a fight you are supposed to win - how many greats have accomplished this? He had a unique career, you can always focus on the negatives, but his consistency is awesome. Other great fighters seem to acknowledge that, people who actually fought know how special it is to remain undefeated for such a long time. Eubank, Nunn, Leonard all have praised Calzaghe.
I think the majority of people would say he wasn't overrated. Most people accept that he was a pretty good fighter who never really tested himself when he should have done. He had plenty of skills but seemed happy defending his belt against nobodies in his back yard when he should have been trying to get a fight with Jones.
If you look at all 4 fighters careers you have mentioned you can see long periods when they have fought below average fighters they have fought equal amounts of more challanging opponents of a fairly similar caliber too. The only two real standout points from the 4 amazing careers are the facts that Joe is undefeated and Roy won a heavyweight title. Every thing they all achevied in their fights I have taken in to account.
