Tell me you are joking right ???? Pre 2005 : Eubank Reid Woodhall Sheika Post 2005 : Jones Jr Hopkins Lacy Kessler Bika Enough said ?????
I remember on this very website MANY people were predicting Lacy to ice Calzaghe in about 4 or 5 rounds. They were calling Lacy a "mini Tyson" and talking about his muscles etc. like that has a damn thing to do with being a prize fighter. I remember watching the fight and Calzaghe putting on a damn clinic of epic proportions. It was probably other than Klitschko/Williams the most one sided "championship" fight in the last 15 years or so. Then AFTER the fight the SAME people on here that were predicting an early Lacy KO were talking about how **** Lacy was etc. It was comical.
I thought Lacy was gonna win because he was younger, stronger, and I believed Calzaghe's style was kinda weak and gay. Ate a lot of crow after that fight, but oh well.
At the time, most Americans who were picking Lacy had never even seen Calzaghe fight. Calzaghe had been fighting down to the level of his opposition, and the media gave the impression that he was on the slide and Lacy was a young gun on the rise. Additionally, Lacy was receiving a ton of hype because his KO power. KOs bring in the casual fans, and the networks wanted the viewers.
What is wrong with being American? I like fighters who aren't American. Eric Morales is one of my favorites. I like Pacquiou. I can't stand Mayweather, and he's an American. I don't like the Klitchsko's. I didn't like Cals slappy style. I still don't like it, but I have more respect for it now.
I'm an american who can admit that I never seen Calzaghe fight. Ever. I thought he was just a stepping stone in Lacy's career. I wasn't a knowledgable fight fan back then and I believe that Lacy was the next big thing. I knew nothing about Calzaghe. Now I know.
Because Lacy was completely overhyped by the American media and in fact, the British media, come to think of it, at the time of the fight.
Yeah, but we can't really be blamed for that. The guy's fights weren't televised here before Lacy, and the boxing media only mentioned him in passing if they happened to be breaking down potential matchups in the SMW division. I'd seen Calzaghe fight before Lacy, but only because I managed to find a couple of his fights on the internet. And I totally agree about Calzaghe being seen as a "stepping stone" for Lacy's rise to prominence. Most of the conversation by boxing pundits in the lead up to the fight was centered around what round Lacy would score the KO.
LMAO thats so true. Even now when a major fight takes place most people say 'he hasnt faced a puncher like that guy' or 'he cant take a shot'. When will people learn that boxing is about skill i.e mayweather.
Lacy was overrated because of the way he beat guys and not many people knew who Joe Calzaghe was at the time.
Americans had never seen Calzaghe Lacy - Reid > Calzaghe - Reid Agressive marketing Basically American ignorance and anyone who listened to the Americans.
