Your spot on he knew how to defend attacks from differing angles. He knew he could dip when on ropes and create a compact shell and know that his opponent couldn't get any purchase on his shots by punching down. When at range again spot on..never flat footed he would move inside of a shot and dip under the next shot and back out....a man of angles.

I'd advise any young boxer or current fledgling fighters to watch him. He dips low in pocket so he can counter without being hit...such a smart fighter and you did a great job identifying his defensive techniques :good

i have it on DVD and its quite poor quality. Anyway Jeff, thoughts?

    another great anaylisis.

I liked the way he put his head into his opponents chest and he was near unhittable but he could still counter.

Agreed. He could fight at range and in pocket had no trouble. Pleasure to watch. He used so many techniques to defend himself but always looked in control.

I'm glad you brought him to attention on here. He may not be everyone's cup of tea but for me i love watching great defensive fighters.

No Probs :good...i'm well chuffed they re-upped it. It's one of my favorites and they took it off for a while and i was gutted. It's got a wide range of fighters in that vid but all had great defenses in there prime.

Yeah i agree with you...i was a bit shocked how low they had Pep as well. I like Sweet Pea but i do feel his ranking in that is a place to high for me. I'd have him in at number two.

I came across him by accident. I nicked a video of him from my amateur boxing gym. Stuck it on expecting to be bored within two minutes like I was at most black and white fights till I actually fell in love with the sport and I was absolutely enthralled. An incredible punching machine. Not quite top ATG status but a very rich mans JCChavez. Check him out.

Pep is a pure master. Watch his shoulder and head feints, he darts one way then all of a sudden is moving around the other. Pure class.

Whittaker does amazing stuff thats 20 punches he makes Oscar miss.

    Cerdan i like him.

if your searching YoutUbe look for a Happy Lora tribute video, you love defensive fighters, youll be creaming yourself over this guy. Also check out Miguel Canto and Hilario Zapata

Jeff, did your amatuer gym have a video collection, id love that in my gym. I was never bored at B&W videos i think theres a haunting bueaty about wathcing a guy from the 20s or 30s do his trade.

I actually think Chavez is better than Cerdan
