After watching last night’s performance I would say his time as a belt holder of significance in the division is now over. He could campaign at EBU level but there is no guarantee he would have a long reign or earn worthwhile money whilst doing or achieving that. With Hennessy Sports deal coming to an end with ITV in the next few months then I see even less scope for Witter to make an impact with the paying public. He is never going to do good numbers on PPV and will at best be a chief support to other fighters in the Hennessy stable if he can obtain a British, commonwealth or EBU belt. Witter is not a great fighter to watch and his rants about Hatton and now Khan (both very popular fighters with large followings) will not endure him to either of those camps. Witter is 35 now and realistically only has a few years of his career left. If he keeps busy and has at least three fights a year (preferably four) than maybe defending a British, commonwealth or EBU belt he could earn himself around £60,000 a year after paying his bills? That beats doing a 9 – 5 for £20,000 a year for sure. If he can stay in shape and in the mix at that level for three or four years than maybe he can squirrel enough aside to invest in a small gym or something. Walking away from the game now because he is no longer top ten in his division would not be a smart move unless he is financially secure. I doubt he is even close to being that myself. For Hatton it is different. He has financial security so would be a fool to box on. But maybe they can do each other a favour after all these years of discord? Hatton gives Witter the fight he wanted and Hatton gets his victory in his final bout and Witter gets a decent payday to help with life outside of the ring. If I was offered that by Hatton and I was in Witter’s circumstances I think I would put my pride aside and take it. Maybe Warren & Khan are still keen also?
The trouble is boxers dont always think rationaly about their livelihoods, boxing is in their blood and the training and preparation and thrill of fighting is something thats hard to walk away from. Its hard to adapt to life outta the ring. But you are right, Witter probably has a few years left in him in which he can amass a few more quid - dont think he will ever get another title shot though . His career is now on the downward slope and that must be heart breaking
