[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Former WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov (22-1-1, 17 KOs) has given an exclusive interview to Fightnews.com in which he told us he is not leaving boxing as had been reported. He also said he will be self-managed and will stop working with trainer Jeff Mayweather.

Sultan by now many people have read the reports. Are you officially retiring?

“I am not leaving boxing, nor did I consider leaving. Claims from my promoters that I shall leave boxing are false. They have no right to speak such words about me retiring. I will make that decision instead of them.”

When will you return to the ring?

“I think within a year. Now I need to receive an American visa and solve the business in USA. Now there are ongoing litigations and I can’t fight. But I absolutely will remain in boxing and I don’t want to continue any further speculation on this subject.”

How are things going in court?

“For me it’s very good. Soon all to end.”

With whom will you work with in the future?

“I will not have a manager. I’ll manage myself. For many years I have been engaged in professional boxing. I know a lot and I won’t be confused. As to which promotional companies I’ll work with, all this will be learned soon.”

Where will you fight, Russia or the USA?

“It can be both in Russia and in the USA. I don’t know.”

You will continue to work with trainer Jeff Mayweather?

“No. About this I can say Jeff is a great trainer. He has given me a lot in professional boxing, and I have learned a lot. I am very grateful to him, but we should part.”

Who will be your new trainer?

“I can’t tell to you now, but it will be an American trainer.”

You haven’t fought for more than a year-and-a-half. What is your physical condition?

“It’s excellent. I play football with friends. My condition is very good.”

There are rumors that you have a child in the USA.

“It is a lie! Here I have nothing to say.”

Another decent fighter the Hw division can use, not sure why he took so much time off and still won't be back that soon either.

I've never quite understood the dislike of Sultan on ESB. He's a very skilled boxer, a rarity at HW these days, and has good speed and power. Other than the Wlad disaster, his fights have been entertaining. He could give any of the current HWs (other than Wlad and Vitali) trouble. I'm glad he's not retiring. But he'll have major ringrust when he finally returns.

me neither... he was exciting.. like in Ibragimov-Javier Mora... he's uderapreciated (check spell), but it's not like if the division is missing a big piece.... he's just a gatekeeper

He should get in shape and come back with a fight against Chagaev.

Its funny Sultan is getting so much love and Wlad so much hate. Interesting.

Ugh. Another undermotivated, pudgy Russian to further sully the current Heavyweight wasteland. Doesn't matter who his new trainer is if he doesn't really get in condition (sorry, touch football with your buddies is NOT good conditioning for boxing), or if he gives up on winning and just goes through the motions when things become difficult. Without real desire and heart, Sultan will only go so far, and continue to bore everyone to death in the process.

I liked him before the wlad fight, but wow. That really was a disgrace... Your fighting for the world heavyweight championship with YOUR belt on the line....... No hustle.... Didnt even have the heart to go all out and try to take a crack at wlads weak chin :-(

He was talking about playing soccer. Which is actually really good for conditioning

Good news, he's a very skilled boxer and his old, pre-Mayweather style, was very exciting. Since he parted with Mayweather, it seems like he might be back to his aggressive, old self. Hopefully he stayed in shape and is still as good as he used to be. Not the next coming of Ali, but a nice addition to the division.

The fearless Sultan that took out Mount Whitaker was a good fighter, he needs to revert back to that version. He fought like a scared kitten against Wlad, Briggs, and Evander, it made sense against Briggs because he can hardly move his feet but he got stuck in that mode in his future fights....

If Sultan comes back hungry I can see him getting a spot in the top ten fairly quickly and making things interesting :good
