Do not get me wrong I am all for a legit stoppage to avoid serious long term damage. However as of late we have had a slew of fighter quitting in their corner or in the middle of the ring, Cotto, DLH, Guerro, Whitter, Cambell, Ortiz. I have been following the sport since 1974 and am a huge boxing history buff. I am also a Special Forces Combat Vet who has boxed amateur and continues to teach combatives skills to are military forces so I do not consider myself an armchair warrior. I am just sick of these hot prospect and Champions quitting when the going gets tough. Please bring back the fighter of the likes of a Basilio, Lamotta, Frazier or Marciano. If I paid for these fights I would be pissed.

Its a sign of the times in boxing the warrior mentality is becoming a dying breed with all the politics that have taken over boxing..

What if fighters had only become smarter?
Knowing there is no way they'll win and placing their health before their pride?

I'm not saying i like it. Just a tought.

some just didnt answer the bell for the next round and some like cotto needed to be stopped. there is a difference but yeah, there seems to be more voluntary stoppages lately. when your guy is taking a knee for a second knockdown and looks like cotto did...

    (loaded gloves debate aside)

I agree you know not everyone wants to become braindead at 45. Theres more to life then boxing for alot of these guys now back in the day guys ate, slept and breathed boxing so they thought nothing of risking their lifes when it got seriously dangerous. It kinda sucks but id do the same thing probablly. Well not in like a Junior Witter case but probablly in the Oscar vs Pacquiao fight.

I doubt if fighters today are smarter then in the past, look how many Championships have been one by the fighter who was behind. I believe their is a lack of intestinal fortitude and as was stated by JuanMa a weakend warrior mentality. If they want to be Champion then they should perform like one.

Its all mentality brother bando. Most of our old school fighters came up from poverty and it forced them to a tough mentality. A lot of the guys that have quit in their corner are guys who might not have the same mentallity toughness.

I think it is partly to do with an increased awareness of the risks that they are putting themselves under. We could probably list on one hand the number of ex-worldclass boxers that don't show the effects of brain damage or some other serious medical condition. It may be hard for the over-demanding, blood thirsty crowd to come to terms with but I imagine many boxers now would like to actually be able to enjoy their retirement to the fullest.

In the past fighters may have been less likely to quit because they needed the money. That's the only reason that old school fighters fought so often, they got paid **** compared to boxers today, and anyone who thinks it just down to warrior mentality is just burying their head in the sand.

I have the utmost respect for fighters that will go out on their shield, but I would never demand that they do it. If they prove to be a fighter that is liable to quit, and you don't want to pay to watch that then you don't have to, it really is that simple...and don't try and convince me that you all actually paid to watch Nate, Juan etc quit (a few of you may have, but I'm not naive).

When there were only 8 weight classes and one champion per weight class, is wasn't as easy to get a title shot. If you got one , and didn't make the most of it, you probably wouldn't get another chance.
But guys like Nate Can'tAnswerTheBell , and Junior Quitter have already had second and third chances, so why not quit today and fight another day?

I think the warrior mentality will come back - they're probably a little spooked right now because there have been so many death's lately. I know it's always been dangerous, but with all the media sources, it's reported a lot more now.

Yes, That is Duran on my avatar and one of my favorite all time fighters and yes i could not believe what he did in his second fight with Leonard. He did however come back from the "No Mass" incident and redeem himself with some incredible performances against Moore, Hagler and Barkley. The man fought for five decades.
